Lightship is an early-stage hardware startup launched in 2020 by Tesla alumni that is bringing the $26B recreational vehicle industry into the electric age. Based in San Francisco and Boulder, Lightship is designing and producing an aerodynamic, battery-powered trailer that liberates travelers from the noise, emissions, and range anxiety of gas RVing.
About the Role
As a mechanical design engineering intern you will be the understudy of the full-time mechanical design engineers, working with them on all tasks related to scoping, design, optimization, testing, and manufacturing a world class power system. This includes working with high voltage battery packs, power electronics, electric propulsion systems, and solar arrays.
Internship dates: Summer 2024
Responsibilities
Assist with creation of CAD models for the RV power system. This includes mechanical packaging of sourced components, routing of HV cabling and LV communication harnesses, creation of custom designed enclosures, selection of off the shelf components such as connectors, seals, fasteners and plumbing of thermal management systemsAnalysis of components for stress/deflection, thermal properties, and electrical characteristicsSet up and run engineering experiments, including functional testing, safety tests, characterization tests, and field testsHelp with troubleshooting and failure analysis of componentsFabricate prototype parts and test articles, including beta vehiclesMinimum Qualifications
