About the company:

The world needs a clean and reliable source of base-load energy to develop sustainably into the future. That’s what Tokamak Energy is striving to achieve.

Tokamak Energy is a private company accelerating the development of fusion power.

Fusion – the energy source that powers the sun – is globally accepted as the best way to generate plentiful, safe, secure and clean energy. The tokamak is the most heavily researched and best understood of all the different paths to fusion.

It is now acknowledged that the spherical tokamak design offers the smallest and most cost-effective solution. This is our solution. Yet there are many complex engineering challenges that need to be overcome for demonstration and commercialisation of this technology.

Our team of world-class fusion scientists and magnet engineers is tackling these challenges to develop efficient and affordable fusion power. Our unique approach is centred on rapid innovation using the latest materials and technology – but building on decades of scientific research and experience. This strategy gives us – and the world – a faster way to fusion.

Once fusion electricity is achieved, our scalable technology could be rolled out across the world as a solution to one of humanity’s greatest challenges: clean and sustainable energy for all.

The FOSTER programme's enhanced internship scheme provides students an opportunity to gain work experience within the growing UK fusion industry. The FOSTER programme is looking to build the talent pipeline into the industry. Over the past three years, 83 students have participated in placements in 20 host organisations around the UK, with many receiving offers of employment after their graduation.

Tokamak Energy are fully committed to building talent within the fusion industry and excited to offer internship opportunities across our business. The placement will give you valuable experience working within a commercial fusion company alongside talented experts within the field, building both your technical and business knowledge.

Placements at Tokamak Energy also give students the opportunity to regularly collaborate not only with our employees, but crucially with other members of your cohort. We recognise the value of creating a supportive learning environment to enable you to explore the subjects and skills that you are passionate about. This is your chance to dive into the world of Fusion Energy and help shape the future of sustainable energy!

Understanding the thermo-mechanical, electro-magnetic, neutronic, and irradiated properties of different materials is central to planning the design of fusion devices. Data on these properties is extremely valuable as it requires significant investment in testing, which for fusion applications can be exceedingly expensive and/or time consuming. This role is aimed at developing the framework and tools for a database that will house the materials data from Tokamak Energy, open literature, and other partner institutions.

In this role, you will:

·       Design data structures in the TE materials database with emphasis on compatibility with Ansys Granta MI Enterprise.

·       Format templates and develop scripting tools that can be used to populate the database.

·       Format templates and develop scripting tools that can process raw test data and statistical data into design data.

·       Participate in international working groups on fusion materials data sharing, quality standards, and transparency.

·       Develop workflows to interface with machine learning tools.

Requirements

·       Required: knowledge of programming language(s) useful to database structuring and tool development (such as Python, SQL, R, etc.).

·       Required: communicating and relating with others (oral/written)

·       Valued: experience with database administration and management.

·       Valued: understanding of thermo-mechanical, electro-magnetic, neutronic, and irradiated material properties.

·       Valued: experience using analysis tools such as Ansys.

·       Valued: experience with the application of machine learning tools.

Benefits

  • 6 days holiday (plus bank holidays)
  • Cohort experience
