About the company:

The world needs a clean and reliable source of base-load energy to develop sustainably into the future. That’s what Tokamak Energy is striving to achieve.

Tokamak Energy is a private company accelerating the development of fusion power.

Fusion – the energy source that powers the sun – is globally accepted as the best way to generate plentiful, safe, secure and clean energy. The tokamak is the most heavily researched and best understood of all the different paths to fusion.

It is now acknowledged that the spherical tokamak design offers the smallest and most cost-effective solution. This is our solution. Yet there are many complex engineering challenges that need to be overcome for demonstration and commercialisation of this technology.

Our team of world-class fusion scientists and magnet engineers is tackling these challenges to develop efficient and affordable fusion power. Our unique approach is centred on rapid innovation using the latest materials and technology – but building on decades of scientific research and experience. This strategy gives us – and the world – a faster way to fusion.

Once fusion electricity is achieved, our scalable technology could be rolled out across the world as a solution to one of humanity’s greatest challenges: clean and sustainable energy for all.

The FOSTER programme's enhanced internship scheme provides students an opportunity to gain work experience within the growing UK fusion industry. The FOSTER programme is looking to build the talent pipeline into the industry. Over the past three years, 83 students have participated in placements in 20 host organisations around the UK, with many receiving offers of employment after their graduation.

Tokamak Energy are fully committed to building talent within the fusion industry and excited to offer internship opportunities across our business. The placement will give you valuable experience working within a commercial fusion company alongside talented experts within the field, building both your technical and business knowledge.

Placements at Tokamak Energy also give students the opportunity to regularly collaborate not only with our employees, but crucially with other members of your cohort. We recognise the value of creating a supportive learning environment to enable you to explore the subjects and skills that you are passionate about. This is your chance to dive into the world of Fusion Energy and help shape the future of sustainable energy!

We have a range of in-house magnet modelling tools developed in MATLAB. A core requirement of the tools is to pre-process the user requirements and simulation setup and then post-process the results of the simulations. For this we need to develop our 3D CAD viewing capabilities to allow for interactive development of the magnet simulation and then thorough interrogation of the results post-simulation.

This functionality will be developed in MATLAB to avoid 3rd party toolboxes and allow future expansion and maintainability.

Particularly successful interns will have a chance to develop the core simulation tools and add in thermal, electrical-magnetic or mechanical functionality into the simulation.

In this role, you will:

  • Help develop the 3D visualization code for magnet modelling:
  • Create methods for user selection, alteration or querying of 3D geometry.
  • Create an interactive results viewing suite that allows for time-domain scalar and vector results to be clearly visualized, saved and high-resolution images and videos created.
  • Develop automated tests for any functionality created
  • Develop user-documentation to explain

Requirements

  • Studying a relevant Degree or Masters : Physics, Engineering, Maths, Computer Science or Science degree with a computational emphasis
  • Confident with the MATLAB coding language
  • Ideally some knowledge of Engineering + Multi-Physics simulations
  • Ideally some level of coding version control, e.g. GIT
  • Ideally good grounding in geometry and vector calculus
  • Able to develop functionality to meet user-requirements
  • Appreciation of software development ideals such as scalability, maintainability and extensibility
  • Good communication skills with ability to work collaboratively with team members
  • Able to articulate problems and confidence to raise issues that are affecting development

Benefits

  • 6 days holiday (plus bank holidays)
  • Cohort experience
  • This is a fantastic opportunity to get a closer look at what we do, the work environment, and the exciting roles we have available.
