About the company:

Over millions of years, silicate rock weathering has regulated Earth’s climate. By crushing silicate rocks and spreading them on agricultural soils - an approach called Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW) - we can accelerate Earth’s natural process into a solution capable of addressing the urgency of climate change.

Existing agricultural and silicate rock sites - namely 5,000+ global silicate rock quarries surrounded by agricultural land - have the potential to remove billions of tonnes of CO2 with enhanced rock weathering. Despite this potential, ERW hasn’t scaled given the extraordinary scientific, technological, and operational challenges involved. Terradot, founded out of the Stanford ecosystem, is addressing these challenges by advancing the science, building the technology, and assembling the coalition needed to make this potential a reality.

We’ve started in Brazil – one of the world’s most optimal locations for ERW thanks to its tropical soils, strength in agriculture, and clean electricity grid. There, we are building the most ambitious ERW hub to date. This hub will drive the necessary breakthroughs in ERW science, ensuring every tonne of carbon dioxide removed is measured and tracked with certainty.

These insights will power digital tools for the optimization and verification of carbon removal projects, enabling the replicability of these hubs globally If successful, this approach will uniquely and rapidly catalyze global-scale carbon removal, enabling the transformation of [300] such quarries in Brazil and [5,000+] global quarries into carbon removal hubs.

Terradot has assembled a growing team of leading scientists and engineers with decades of published research (over 100,000 citations on ERW) and hands-on expertise in related fields, providing unmatched experience to drive advancements in ERW.

We are looking for a Field Scientist to oversee field operations and trials in Mato Grosso do Sul. This role involves leading data collection and curation for soil aqueous, climate and crop datasets, as well as maintaining experimental devices like soil moisture sensors, lysimeters, and weather stations. The candidate will collaborate with scientists, product managers, and farmers, ensuring field protocols are followed, and samples are properly prepared and shipped to labs.

Location: 100 km radius around Dourados (Mato Grosso do Sul)

Language: Portuguese and English.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Lead Ground Science activities and supervise operations and execution of field trials for experiments.

  • Oversee data collection and curation of soil solution, weather, and crop (biomass and grain yield) datasets.

  • Maintain and monitor experimental devices such as soil moisture sensors, lysimeters, and weather stations.

  • Manage or execute sample preparation (soil moisture, soil pore water, and crop) and ensure shipment to labs.

  • Write and review field protocols and methodologies.

  • Communicate directly with chief scientists and product managers in English.

  • Collaborate with science and sampling teams, and coordinate with farmers or farm advisors on field logistics (fertilization, herbicide applications, harvest, etc.)

Background & Requirements:

  • PhD in Agriculture Science, Soil Science, Environmental Sciences, Geosciences, or related field showcasing experience in field/trial experimentation and people’s supervision.

  • Extensive expertise in agronomy and soil science, with over 5 years of experience.

  • Proven experience in collecting and managing large trial, field (at farm level) datasets, with at least 3 years of hands-on expertise.

  • Experience with large databases and data analysis.

  • Ability to write in English and demonstrated experience publishing papers in high-impact journals.

  • Strong communicator who can present scientific work to various audiences, including government leaders and local communities and collaborate across disciplines.

  • Proactive problem-solver and have a strong attention to detail but with focus to get high quality ground data for scientific purposes.

  • Experience with soil solid and soil aqueous time series datasets and carbon removal projects.

  • Demonstrated industry experience.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license.

What does success in this role look like?

  • Travel to the field trials once per week/10 days and work together with the ground team members to get high quality ground data.

  • Engage with farmers and farm advisors.

  • Discriminate and classify data sources of different quality levels.

  • Solve logistics problems in the field which directly affects the data quality.

  • Create data pipelines for data collection and curation.

  • Have strong capability to understand complex protocols and methodologies and adapt our field experiments and deployments to be compliant with them.

  • Work as part of a multicultural and multidisciplinary team of agronomists, geologists, data scientists, biochemists, modelers, engineers and product developers.

About Us:

Our mission is to stabilize Earth’s climate by transforming nature’s most powerful permanent carbon removal process into a global climate solution. By advancing science, building technology, and assembling a global coalition, we are catalyzing a global initiative to scale Enhanced Rock Weathering within the next decade, starting in Brazil.

Founded out of the Stanford University ecosystem, Terradot is led by the world’s leading experts to advance the science and technology of ERW. Our unique structure bridges industry, academia, and government and allows our team to contribute with speed & scale. We are backed by John Doerr, Sheryl Sandberg & Tom Bernthal, George Roberts, Microsoft’s Climate Innovation Fund, Google, Cisco and Venture Funds, Floodgate, Kleiner Perkins, Acre Venture Partners, Gigascale Capital, Valor Capital, Ponderosa Ventures and others.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
