The Facilities and Equipment Safety Engineer will ensure safe operation, maintenance, and integration of equipment and infrastructure. This role plays a key part in fostering a culture of safety and compliance across our research, testing, and development labs. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in lab operations, facility systems, and safety regulations to drive risk reduction and support continuous improvement.

What you’ll do

  • Conduct hazard analyses and safety assessments for laboratory equipment, infrastructure, and facility systems (e.g., HVAC, gas delivery, power distribution). 
  • Support the design, setup, and relocation of lab equipment, ensuring compliance with safety standards and best practices. 
  • Monitor and maintain safety systems, including ventilation (fume hoods, cleanrooms), emergency power, fire suppression, gas detection, and containment systems. 
  • Partner with EHS, Facilities, and Lab Managers to identify, mitigate, and track risks related to equipment use, electrical loads, chemical storage, and space layout. 
  • Investigate safety incidents and equipment failures; perform root cause analysis and drive corrective actions. 
  • Lead or support internal audits, regulatory inspections, and routine safety walkthroughs. 
  • Develop and deliver safety training for lab personnel on topics such as proper equipment use, emergency procedures, and PPE. 
  • Maintain documentation including safety data sheets (SDS), equipment logs, calibration records, and compliance reports. 
  • Support emergency preparedness planning, including drills, response coordination, and business continuity planning. 
  • Oversee the inspection, testing, and maintenance (ITM) of fire alarms, sprinklers, suppression systems, fire extinguishers, emergency lighting, exit signage, and egress pathways. 
  • Conduct fire risk assessments and life safety audits for buildings, labs, and high-occupancy areas. 
  • Participate in incident investigations involving fire hazards or life safety system failures; recommend and implement corrective actions. 
  • Maintain fire safety documentation, ITM logs, permits, and compliance records. 
  • Serve as liaison with local fire departments, code officials and regulatory agencies as needed

What you need

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Safety Engineering, or a related field. 
  • 3+ years of experience in laboratory safety, facilities engineering, or EHS within a technical or research environment. 
  • Knowledge of applicable standards and codes (e.g., OSHA, NFPA, ANSI, ISO, ASHRAE, EPA). 
  • Knowledge of lab and building infrastructure systems (ventilation, compressed gas systems, electrical panels, etc.). 
  • Experience working with fire alarm control panels, suppression systems, smoke control systems, and emergency power systems. 
  • Strong communication, project management, and organizational skills. 
  • Comfortable working hands-on in a dynamic, cross-functional lab environment.

Bonus Qualifications

  • Strong risk assessment and hazard analysis skills. 
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities, particularly in industrial or high-risk environments. Proficient in safety management systems and tools for hazard identification and mitigation. 
  • Ability to communicate complex safety information effectively to both technical and non-technical personnel
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to lead safety initiatives and influence cross-functional teams. 
  • Experience with powertrain equipment testing and validation processes, including test cells and performance testing. 
  • Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma principles in relation to safety. 
  • Knowledge of environmental health and safety (EHS) regulations related to manufacturing processes, including chemical handling and hazardous materials. 
  • Certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or equivalent is highly desirable.

For this position we are targeting a base pay between $111,870.00 - $124,300.00.  Actual compensation offered will be determined by factors such as job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
