About the company:

Vaulted Deep is a carbon removal and waste management company that permanently sequesters organic waste deep underground to prevent carbon emissions and protect communities from contamination. The company collects otherwise unusable organic materials such as excess manure, treated sewage, paper sludge, and agricultural byproducts, then injects them into deep subsurface geological formations using technology adapted from the oil and gas industry. This dual-purpose approach simultaneously addresses organic waste disposal challenges and removes carbon from the atmosphere on a permanent, multi-millennial timescale. Vaulted Deep's mission centers on delivering scalable, verifiable carbon removal while providing practical waste management solutions for municipalities, agricultural operations, and industrial facilities. The company works with a network of local partners including trucking companies, waste operators, feedyards, and public works departments, generating economic activity in the communities where it operates. Its carbon removal credits are certified by Isometric, lending scientific credibility to its permanence claims. The company operates its flagship Great Plains Facility in Hutchinson, Kansas, which has been operational since 2023, and is developing additional sites including the Monarch Fields Facility in Weld County, Colorado. Vaulted Deep was recognized as the No. 3 Most Innovative Company in North America by Fast Company in 2026, reflecting its novel positioning at the intersection of waste management and carbon removal.

Vaulted is a waste management company that removes carbon. We take organic waste that can pollute our environment above ground and safely inject it ultra deep underground—permanently removing carbon from the atmosphere while protecting local land, air, and water. Vaulted is based in Houston, San Francisco, and Kansas.

With a growing team of 70+ people across the country, Vaulted signed the second largest carbon removal offtake ever with Microsoft in July 2025 and is rapidly expanding to new sites.

Vaulted's proprietary technology builds on decades of expertise to deliver safe, durable carbon and waste management solutions now, at scale.

Facilities Engineer

Reports to: Director of Engineering | Location: Houston, TX | Level: Senior

Position Summary

Vaulted Deep develops, constructs, owns, and operates deep well injection facilities that permanently remove carbon from the atmosphere by injecting organic waste — manure, treated sewage, paper sludge, and agricultural byproducts — below confining geology. The Facilities Engineer develops the surface infrastructure that supports injection operations: site grading and earthwork, foundations, roads, drainage, pipelines, utilities, and the modest surface facilities that receive, store, and handle waste. In addition, this role is critical in identifying, planning and designing solutions for utilities to remote sites including power and water supply. The role takes greenfield sites from civil concept through permit-ready design and into construction support.

This is a hands-on design and field-support role, not a coordination function. The Facilities Engineer owns the surface-facility design basis and is accountable when site infrastructure does not perform to spec.

This is a hands-on design and field-support role, not a coordination function. The Facilities Engineer owns the surface-facility design basis and is accountable when site infrastructure does not perform to spec.

Why This Role Matters

Every Vaulted Deep site is greenfield — often remote, with limited existing power, water, and road access. Surface infrastructure must be designed from the ground up. This role makes that design repeatable across a growing, multi-project pipeline: 10+ opportunities in origination, 3 in active development, targeting three-plus projects under construction within two years.

Surface-facility design quality at the Define and Permit Development gates determines whether a project reaches Final Investment Decision with a permit-ready design and a reliable cost estimate.

Primary Responsibilities

– Develop civil and surface-facility design from FEL-1 screening through FEL-3 permit-ready design

– Own grading, earthwork, foundations, roads, drainage, and site layout for greenfield sites

– Design pipelines, utilities, and remote power and water development

– Specify pumps, tanks, electrical equipment, and waste handling / storage areas

– Support truck-traffic, offloading, and site-access design

– Provide engineering input to permit applications in partnership with Regulatory

– Support cost estimating (Class 5 through Class 2) for surface scope

– Provide engineering support through procurement, construction, and commissioning

Leadership Responsibilities

Individual-contributor role reporting to the Director of Engineering. Directs civil and facility-design consultants and reviews EPC / FEED deliverables on a project basis. Partners with Geoscience on wellsite integration, with Permitting & Regulatory on permit design content, and with the PMO on cost and schedule. Presents surface-facility readiness at stage-gate reviews.

Required Experience

– 5–10 years of engineering experience developing greenfield infrastructure projects

– Direct experience with grading, earthwork, foundations, roads, pipelines, utilities, and drainage

– Experience designing modest surface facilities — pumps, tanks, electrical equipment, and storage areas

– Familiarity with remote utility development, including power and water

– Bachelor's degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering preferred, with design and construction experience

Preferred Experience

– Oil & gas or midstream facility experience (preferred, not required)

– Experience with waste handling, offloading, and truck-traffic design

– Exposure to environmental permitting-driven design (UIC, NPDES, air, stormwater)

– PE registration (Texas or reciprocal state)

Technical Competencies

– Civil / site design: grading, earthwork, drainage, roads, and foundations

– Surface facility design: pumps, tanks, electrical equipment, and maintenance facilities

– Pipeline and utility routing and remote power / water development

– Waste handling, offloading, and storage-area layout

– Cost estimating across the AACE Class 5–2 stage-gated framework

Commercial & Business Competencies

– Translates surface-design decisions into CAPEX / OPEX impact for project economics

– Understands how design maturity gates capital release (Origination -> Pre-FEED -> FEED/Permitting -> FID -> Construction -> Startup)

– Supports defensible cost estimates and contingency for the surface scope

– Coordinates site utilities and civil scope with Commercial & Land
