About the company:

Thea Energy is building an economical and scalable fusion energy system utilizing arrays of mass manufacturable magnets and dynamic software controls. Commercial fusion energy can uniquely provide a abundant source of zero-emission power for a sustainable future. Thea Energy is leveraging recent breakthroughs in computation and controls to reinvent the stellarator, a scientifically mature form of magnetic fusion technology. Thea Energy was founded in 2022 as a spin-out of the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory and Princeton University, where the stellarator was originally invented. Thea Energy is currently designing its first integrated fusion system, Eos, based on its planar coil stellarator architecture which will produce fusion neutrons at scale and in steady-state.

About Thea Energy:
Thea Energy is leveraging recent breakthroughs in stellarator physics and engineering to create a faster and simpler approach to commercializing fusion energy. The company is reinventing the stellarator using computer-controlled arrays of planar coils thereby replacing the intricate, complex modular magnets required in all other stellarator architectures. Thea Energy is on a mission to create a limitless source of zero emission energy for a sustainable future.

Position Overview:

Thea Energy is looking for an experienced, highly motivated Electrical Engineer to join its rapidly growing team. The Electrical Engineer will work collaboratively across a cross-functional engineering team to help develop Thea Energy’s core planar coil stellarator fusion technologies. As part of a rapidly growing team, you’ll be part of the organizational build-up of a leading fusion energy company. These roles will have a high degree of autonomy and must be able to move quickly. The Thea Energy team is comprised of self-motivated, creative, and fun individuals with an excitement for solving complex problems.

It’s not necessary to meet all of the skillsets outlined above. Please feel free to send us a note and tell us why you would still be a great fit for this role or Thea Energy.

Diversity and Inclusion:
Thea Energy is an equal opportunity employer committed to creating a company of diverse backgrounds. By creating a diverse environment, we will bring new ideas and approaches to solving some of the world’s hardest (and most important) problems. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, family or marital status, age, disability, veteran’s status, or other characteristic protected by applicable laws and regulations.

Key Responsibility Areas:

  • Design, construct, and operate power supplies and control systems for high-temperature superconducting magnets and plasma heating systems (ECRH).
  • Specify, design, develop, fabricate, and commission bespoke electronic systems, encompassing low-signal analog and digital equipment, capable of operating in high-stress industrial environments including high magnetic field, vacuum, and cryogenic temperatures.
  • Provide comprehensive specifications and facilitate the procurement of commercial off-the-shelf electronic products.
  • Actively engage in discussions to define requirements for the systems to be designed.
  • Provide full-cycle project support, from design to operation, including prototyping and testing of samples.
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with engineering, physics/science, project management, and procurement groups.
  • Generate and revise work packages, including electrical drawings and technical specifications.
  • Manage critical procurement contracts and coordinate with vendors for electrical system design, procurement, and commissioning.
  • Select and implement industry standards (IEEE, ANSI, IEC, etc.) for use in prototyping projects and the future fusion power plant ecosystem.
  • Maintain a detailed project schedule, oversee the delivery of externally furnished documentation and equipment, and coordinate subcontractors.
  •

    Ideal Experience & Skillsets:

  • MS, or PhD in Electrical Engineering or related fields.
  • 5+ years of experience in the design and implementation of electrical and electronic systems in an industrial and/or scientific environment.
  • Technical proficiency in multiple areas of electrical engineering, including a subset of the following: power conversion, medium voltage distribution, switchgears, protective relaying, low voltage process-industrial facility design, instrumentation, and control.
  • Experience using PCB design software (Altium).
  • Experience using CAD software (AutoCad, Solidworks).
  • Experience in designing front-end analog electronics (differential amplifiers, trans-impedance amplifiers, precise and fast voltage comparators).
  • Experience in the design and implementation of power electronics components: PWM converters (GaN/SiC/MOSFETs/IGBTs.), DCL-capacitors, high-frequency transformers, and inductors.
  • Experience using simulation software (PSpice, PLECS, MATLAB, Simulink).
  • Nice to have experience with designing DSP- and MCU-based embedded control systems.
  • Experience in the integration of software and hardware in a high voltage, high current environment would be beneficial.
  • Experience in pulsed power systems; electrical and mechanical transient analysis and/or design implications in complex power systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage system installation within a complex project. Ability to interface with contractors, vendors, and designers.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, ability to conduct design reviews, and organize/present material to both expert and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, and as part of a team.
  • Comfortable working to aggressive deadlines
  • Company Benefits:

  • Salary range $130,000-$150,000
  • Comprehensive health benefits (e.g. medical/dental/vision)
  • Employee equity stock options
  • 20 days PTO
  • Requirements:

  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to perform activities such as typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time.
  • Willingness to occasionally travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call.
