Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.

CFS collaborates with MIT to leverage decades of research combined with groundbreaking new high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. HTS magnets will enable compact fusion power plants that can be constructed faster and at lower cost. Our mission is to deploy these power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. To that end, CFS has assembled a team of leaders in tough tech, fusion science, and manufacturing with a track record of rapid execution. Supported by the world’s leading investors, CFS is uniquely positioned to deliver limitless, clean, fusion power to combat climate change. To implement this plan, we are looking to add dedicated people to the team who treat people well, improve our work by adding multifaceted perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have achieved outstanding results through a range of pursuits, and have skills and experience related to this role.

We are seeking a Director, Project Safety to join our team.  Reporting to the Vice President of EHSS, this role will champion both personal safety and process safety activities on CFS projects.  These projects are ambitious endeavors aimed at developing cutting-edge fusion power technology. We are seeing a strategic battle-tested leader to direct environmental, health, safety and security (EHSS) activities associated with project design, construction, and commissioning. While the initial focus will be on completion of SPARC, this will soon expand to ARC and other projects as our portfolio grows.

CFS team members thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and have demonstrated exceptional results through a range of different pursuits. We all tightly align with our company values of integrity, execution, impact and self-critique. As we grow, we are looking to add talented people who are mission driven and bring diverse perspectives and new ways of solving problems.

At CFS, we deeply value diversity and are an equal opportunity employer by choice. We consider all qualified applicants equally for employment. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, ancestry, citizenship status, protected veteran status, religion, physical or mental disability, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, or any other basis protected by law, ordinance, or regulation.

This team member will:

  • Support project teams in development of a comprehensive EHSS strategy
  • Collaborate with project management to ensure safety is appropriately embedded and integrated into each project work process, from initial designs to successful start-up
  • Guide the project team in the application of traditional EHSS work processes (e.g., design reviews, model reviews, constructability reviews, FMECA’s, PHA’s, etc.) to the novel hazards associated with a first of a kind fusion power plant
  • Interacts with senior management, executives, and/or major stakeholders to define the organization’s risk tolerance and reconcile stakeholder views to ensure consistency. Influence project risk tolerance by providing guidance for redundancy, fault tolerance, and quality levels
  • Champion risk management activities to ensure key EHSS risks are identified and remain top-of mind until the risk is mitigated or retired
  • Deploy, interpret, and maintain guidelines, work processes, and practices that will allow projects to achieve desired EHSS outcomes
  • Develop project specific EHSS procedures where compliance with existing CFS EHSS procedures is not practical or does not provide adequate protection
  • Interfaces with other EHSS SMEs and other stakeholders, serving as the primary point of contact for project personnel on most EHSS issues
  • Provide EHSS direction in the development of strategies for the safe assembly and commissioning of SPARC and future projects
  • Lead a cross functional safety steering team (e.g., construction, assembly, commissioning, operations, EHS) to provide input and guidance on the unique and complex EHSS-issues associated with project delivery
  • Coordinate EHSS deliverables including Case for Safety, Fire Hazard Analysis, Security Vulnerability and Risk Assessments, and other required studies and manage recommendations to closure
  • Lead audit and assurance activities to verify the effectiveness of EHSS-related procedures (i.e., SIMOPS, Permit to Work, Control of Hazardous Energy, Work at Height, Critical Lifts) across projects and ensure identified issues are tracked and driven to closure
  • With support from the wider EHSS team, provide guidance and interpretation on relevant OSHA Standards, life safety codes and standards, safety and access controls systems, and risk assessment tools
  • Oversee Contractor Management Program activities associated with projects. Provide safety-focused input on the pre-qualification, selection, and management of contractor companies
  • Lead and mentor company and contractor EHSS personnel assigned to support projects
  • Ensure adequate and effective emergency response capability exists for project construction, assembly, and commissioning activities
  • Champion investigation of project injuries/illnesses and other EHSS related incidents; assist contractors in the management and analyses of injuries/illnesses and other incidents, including near misses, that occur on projects
  • Capture, communicate, and apply applicable learnings to improve EHSS performance on future projects
  • The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Safety & Health, Chemical or Electrical Engineering, or related technical field
  • 15+ years of progressive experience in a safety role, at least 5 of which were in a leadership role in a high-risk industry, preferably power or process plant design, refining or petrochemical plant projects, or a similar industry
  • Relevant professional certification (e.g., CSP, CIH, or equivalent)
  • Proven track record of supporting the successful delivery of large ($500M+, complex, and schedule driven projects
  • A strategic executer/tactical developer who is willing to personally execute work on SPARC while building and documenting the framework to successfully deliver future projects
  • Proven experience in defining and implementing safety strategies for complex engineering projects
  • In-depth knowledge of a wide range of safety codes and regulations with awareness of emerging industry standards
  • Strong analytical skills to conduct detailed gap analyses of industry standards and internal safety practices
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities, including the capacity to empower and motivate a team toward achieving safety-related objectives
  • Demonstrated competence in the areas of advanced construction practices, management of SIMOPS, and commissioning of hazardous systems
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills required
  • Strong facilitation skills and ability to work from a position of credible influence based on health and safety knowledge versus a position of authority
  • Experience prioritizing EHSS deliverables in a complex, schedule-driven environment
  • Record of continual improvement of safety programs, practices and procedures
  • Additional preferred experience and/or qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Safety & Health, Chemical or Electrical Engineering, or related technical field
  • Advanced skills in electrical safety including high voltage and power plant design
  • Experience developing a Process Safety Management (PSM) program
  • Application of Process Hazard Analysis tools in a non-PSM regulated facility
  • Working knowledge of energy-based hazard recognition principles and Human and Organizational Performance (HOP)
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
  • Perform activities such as typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time
  • Willingness to travel and work extended/irregular hours to support mission critical activities
  • Dedication to safety to mitigate industrial hazards that may include heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, and cryogenics
