The Role:

We are looking for an outstanding engineer for our Crash & Impact Team with a strong background in explicit FE analysis to join our innovative program and help us shape the future of urban e-mobility.

In this position, you will have the opportunity to work within the growing Crash & Impact Team as part of the Design and Aerostructures function. You will report to the Engineering Manager Crash & Impact and be part of a multi-disciplinary Integrated Project Team.

Your Day to Day:

  • Analysis of short-term dynamic crash and impact events to the propulsion system (e.g. hail/bird ingestion, high energy fragment containment) and/or airframe (e.g. fuselage crash, ditching, energy storage protection) by means of explicit FEA.
  • In each work package or project, be responsible for the full numerical modelling workflow: pre-processing, solving, post-processing, reporting and critical interpretation of the results. Each model is often new, unique and requires innovative approaches.
  • Actively affect the design of components to withstand possible crash and impact scenarios during the preliminary and detailed product development phase, including being involved in the definition and support of physical testing as it serves our development and validation objectives.
  • Serve as a contact person to engineers from neighbouring disciplines regarding short-term dynamic events
  • Define numerical FE methods for crash/impact scenarios as well as support the definition of required test plans for validation and verification

Your profile:

  • Sc./M.Eng. or PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or similar preferred
  • 5+ years of experience in a similar position for the analysis of crash and/or foreign body impacts the Aerospace or related industry are necessary
  • Knowledge of nonlinear explicit FEA methods (implicit an advantage), structural mechanics and progressive failure analysis is essential
  • Direct experience in the analysis of aerospace crash/failure or other complex large-scale failure is required
  • Practical experience in the use of the commercial explicit FE code Altair RADIOSS and the corresponding pre- and post-processing tools (HyperMesh & HyperView) is highly desired, though similar experience in LS-Dyna, Pam-Crash or Abaqus/Explicit is acceptable.
  • Strong background in dynamic failure behavior of composite and metal structures/assemblies and the respective modelling approaches highly desirable.
  • Experience in the analysis of impact events to propulsion units and their surrounding structure in the framework of an aircraft engine certification programme is highly desirable
  • Similarly, experience with the simulation of batteries and/or electro-mechanical systems under crash and shock loads would be an advantage
  • Experience with testing, article and fixture design and instrumentation is desirable
  • High level of self-reliance and autonomy, able to structure work and manage deadlines with the ability to also work collaboratively in a team to achieve common goals
  • Fluent English language skills are essential, fluent German or any other language would be beneficial.
