The Controls Engineer will be responsible for the design, development, implementation, and maintenance of automated systems and controls in a manufacturing environment. This role requires a deep understanding of electrical, mechanical, and software systems to improve and optimize manufacturing processes. The Controls Engineer will work closely with cross-functional teams, including maintenance, production, and quality, to ensure efficient and reliable plant operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and Development:
- Design, develop, and implement control systems, including PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers), HMI (Human-Machine), and SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems.
- Develop and maintain electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and control panel layouts.
- Analyze manufacturing processes and identify opportunities for automation and process optimization.
- Implement and test control strategies to improve efficiency, reduce downtime, and enhance product quality.
- Conduct root cause analysis of control system failures and implement corrective actions.
- Maintenance and Support:
- Provide technical support to maintenance and production teams for troubleshooting and resolving control system issues.
- Develop and implement preventative maintenance programs for control systems.
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations and standards for all control systems and equipment.
- Project Management:
- Lead and manage control system projects from concept to completion, including budgeting, scheduling, and resource allocation.
- Coordinate with vendors and contractors for the procurement and installation of control system components.
- Documentation and Training:
- Maintain accurate documentation of control system designs, programs, and processes.
- Train plant personnel on the operation and maintenance of control systems.
- Create and update standard operating procedures (SOPs) related to control systems.
- Compliance and Standards:
- Ensure all control systems comply with industry standards, codes, and regulations.
- Participate in safety audits and risk assessments related to control systems.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, related field, or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in control systems engineering within a manufacturing environment.
- Proficiency in PLC programming languages (e.g., Ladder Logic, Structured Text, Function Block), HMI/SCADA development, and related software tools.
- Strong knowledge of electrical systems, instrumentation, and automation technology.
- Experience with industrial communication protocols (e.g., Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus).
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, P&IDs, and technical drawings.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Excellent communication and project management skills.
- Familiarity with safety regulations and standards (e.g., OSHA, NFPA).
- Familiarity with electrical regulations and standards (e.g., NEC, IEEE).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies.
- Experience with industrial networking and cybersecurity practices.
- Certification in Control Systems Engineering (CSE) or a related certification.
- Knowledge of hardware (A-B: Stratix 5700, 1756 series, 1734 series, 5069 series, PowerFlex 52x & 75x series, 2711P series, ) (IFM: AL1123, AC1422) (E&H: CM444).
- Instrumentation experience (E&H: Liquiphant Level Switch, Modular RTD, Sanitary RTD, Promag Meter, Mass Meter, Conductivity, Memosens pH & DO, Liquiline Transmitter) (IFM: Flow Switch, Pressure Sensor, Hygienic Temperature Transmitter, Continuous Level Sensor, Temperature Cable Sensor, Inductive Prox., IO-Link Master) (Emerson: Coriolis Meter)
- Knowledge of Software (RS Linx, FT Linx, AssetCentre, ControlFlash +, FT Activation Manager, FT Admin Console, FT VantagePoint, FT Security, PlantPax 5.0, Thin Manager, Active Directory, FT Live Data Test Client, CCW, FT Historian SE aka OSI PI, System Management Tools, PI System Explorer, PI Historian, SQL, IO-Link, Moneo, LR Device, vSphere,)
Work Environment:
- This role is primarily based in a manufacturing plant environment with occasional exposure to loud noise, moving mechanical parts, and other industrial hazards.
- Occasional travel may be required for training, project meetings, or vendor visits.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand, walk, and work in industrial environments for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and move equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.

Compensation:
The base salary range for this role is $90,000 - $110,000 annually, which is just one aspect of our total compensation package. In addition to the salary, this position is eligible for a potential annual bonus and equity! Actual compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and location.
