Carbon Clean is an established global leader in industrial carbon capture solutions helping essential, but hard-to-abate, industries decarbonise. Our innovative solutions significantly reduce the costs and environmental impacts of carbon capture compared to conventional technologies.
Technology to achieve 'net zero'.
Role Purpose:
The R&D team looks to drive innovation within Carbon Clean, solving problems and identifying and filling knowledge gaps. As a CFD Engineer within the R&D organization, you will be responsible for performing high-fidelity CFD simulations of the hydrodynamics involved in Carbon Clean’s process technology, timely and high-quality analysis of CFD data, and providing recommendations to the technical team. You will be an integral part of the idea generation process and your work will be critical to driving process innovation and intellectual property generation for Carbon Clean. You will also proactively engage with internal and external stakeholders, consulting with thoughtful and well communicated solutions custom fit to their requirements.
Your Key Focus Areas Will be:
- Performing high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations to support technology development for CycloneCC, as well as supporting new idea generation, de-risking novel process concepts, and pilot/process-scale troubleshooting activities.
- Proactively preparing simulation plans in support of project goals, and performing post-processing and data analysis using your knowledge of fluid mechanics and engineering.
- Preparing figures, reports, and presentations to document project results. Presenting these results regularly to internal and external stakeholders.
- Evaluating different modeling approaches to aim for accuracy of model predictions.
- Growing in the CFD specialist role by keeping yourself updated with new trends/software features in CFD, proactively assessing new features, and making recommendations for software licensing/resources.
- Liaising with software vendors, and external parties including research organizations, national labs, universities, and contract service organizations.
- To develop and maintain expertise in the company’s core technologies through reading literature and attending conferences and webinars.
Requirements
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline with at least 3 years of post-graduate experience working in a related role.
- Demonstrated understanding of fluid mechanics fundamentals (theory) and numerical modeling including turbulence models (RANS, LES, DNS), and multiphase modeling (Eulerian, Lagrangian, VOF).
- At least 3 years of hands-on experience using:
- Commercial CFD software packages - StarCCM+, ANSYS Fluent, OpenFOAM
- Commercial CAD software packages – SpaceClaim, DesignModeler, SolidWorks, NXCommercial
- Meshing software packages – Ansys Meshing, Fluent Meshing - Experience simulating flow through packed beds and rotating geometry (using sliding mesh and moving reference frame approaches).
- Excited to contribute to revolutionary technology development in CO2 capture.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with, and work well with others in a dynamic team environment.
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
- Being self-motivated and self-reliant.
Preferred Requirements:
- Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline with thesis work in computational fluid dynamics, and at least 3-4 years of experience with using StarCCM+ and/or ANSYS Fluent
- Experience with writing field functions in StarCCM+ and/or UDFs in Ansys Fluent.
- Solid understanding of dimensionless groups, heat transfer, and mass transfer fundamentals.
- Programming experience in any of the following: C, Fortran, Java, Python, or Excel VBA.
- Demonstrated experience of presenting CFD/modeling analysis results to stakeholders.
