As part of a small, passionate and accomplished team, you will use your knowledge of building simulation to analyze the performance of concrete 3D printed (C3DP) homes and structures of various types and locations. The work will be used to establish the performance requirements for the buildings and homes built with ICON’s wall system. As an ICONIC, you will be a leader and direct contributor to the development of entirely novel approaches to advance humankind’s ability to provide dignified, affordable, resilient, and sustainable shelter to the world. This role reports to the Head of Building Science and Building Performance and is based in our Austin, TX lab. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

To work under the direction of the Head of Building Science and Building Performance to deliver solutions in any or all the following areas:

  • Develop and define the process and measurable metrics to analyze energy performance of wall systems and whole home performance using an ICON wall system.
  • Evaluate and develop analytical approaches to automate the calculation of wall and whole home thermal performance.
  • Conduct occupant comfort analysis for buildings and homes, including thermal comfort, visual comfort (glare), and daylight levels.
  • Conduct simulations including parametric modeling of energy, water, and emissions using analysis software and custom calculation tools.
  • Develop custom calculation tools and workflow integrations to automate the calculation process.
  • Assist with defining the baseline metrics and performance requirements for C3DP homes and buildings to provide and support improved occupant comfort and living including indoor air quality, thermal comfort, visual comfort and daylight.
  • Support documentation of sustainability reporting and rating systems (LEED, LBC, GRI, WELL).
  • Support the development of a carbon accounting methodology and scope for ICON’s wall system. 
  • Work with and interpret data sets to develop sustainability frameworks and strategies for projects and developments at multiple scales, while completing environmental and social impact assessments
  • Engage with customer and client project teams to ensure each project meets ICON’s sustainability standards. 
  • Develop the diagraming, mapping and digital illustrations of technical sustainability concepts to visualize intent for non-technical audiences including homeowners, development partners and internal and external stakeholders.
  • Create internal and external PowerPoint presentations, memos, reports and graphic presentations
  • Work with internal team members and external consultants to review and prepare reports and sustainability documentation.
  • Support the preparation of life cycle assessments.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum 5 or more years of work experience with building analysis.
  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree, in Sustainability Management, Architecture, Engineering, Urban Planning, Project Management or a related subject.
  • Proficient in preparing the energy and IAQ reporting requirements of two or more of the following: LEED, WELL, Passive House, and Living Building Challenge. 
  • Experience with developing automated parametric modeling workflows.
  • Experience and proficiency in building performance software specifically Energy Plus , Open Studio, or IES VE.
  • Experience developing scripting using one or more of the following: Python, R, Java D3 or similar tools.
  • Data analysis skills to quantify and interpret complex resource flows across a site or building.
  • Strong experience in built environment and corporate sustainability projects.
  • Excellent communication skills, fluency in spoken and written English.
  • Strong organizational skills, and the ability to meet critical deadlines.
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision.

 

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Master’s degree or higher in a related discipline.
  • 8+ years of professional experience working in a building analysis related field and proficient with energy, thermal comfort and daylight analysis.
  • Experience and familiarity with the process to prepare Environmental Product Declarations and Health Product Declarations.
  • Understanding and application of ASHRAE Standard 55, 62.1, 62.2, 90.1 and 189.
  • Experience working with and modeling passive design approaches including natural ventilation and thermal mass.
  • Further certification in other related engineering or science fields (i.e. sustainable engineering) is beneficial.
  • Knowledgeable in using the latest version of Building Codes, ASHRAE Standards and sustainability reference standards.
  • Experience reading and evaluating building performance reports (energy modeling, thermal comfort, daylight levels, etc.)
