Role Summary

The Automation Controls Engineer Intern works on a team responsible for developing and commissioning automated cell manufacturing equipment including hardware, software, robots, safety, equipment, programming etc. They bring all conceptualized ideas from development to production. Specific areas of work are Battery (module), Pack, and Cell Electrode manufacturing.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce application of and guide vendors through proper implementation of Rivian standards (including but not limited to hardware, electrical, safety, pneumatic, network, PLC, HMI, Robot, SCADA, and MES).
  • Establish test plans and control test plan execution.
  • Participate in development of controls standards and specifications by feeding back lessons-learned and gaps from each project to ensure that future projects will run smoother.
  • Write, review, and approve PLC logic using Ladder and/or Structured Text with an emphasis on code that is organized, structured, documented, maintainable and reusable
  • Create, review, and approve user HMI and SCADA screens that are user-friendly, intuitive and suitable for operating and troubleshooting equipment.
  • Debug and optimize automated processes to minimize cycle time, maximize availability and improve yield.
  • Train Maintenance and Production teams who will support the equipment after deployment into productions
  • Solve technically complex problems using fundamental, data driven methodologies.

Qualifications

  • Actively pursuing a Bachelors, Masters or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent in Controls and Computer Control Systems, Mechatronic Engineering, Automation and Robotics Engineering
  • Hands-on Controls Engineering or Applications Engineering experience in a fast-paced manufacturing environment
  • Familiarity with common controls hardware components used in high volume manufacturing.
  • Prior experience developing electrical schematics using ePLAN, AutoCAD Electrical, or similar.
  • Experience programming Allen-Bradley Rockwell, Siemens, or Beckhoff PLCs (a plus)
  • Experience programming and interfacing PLCs with industrial 6-axis robots such as Fanuc, Kawasaki, ABB, etc. (a plus)
  • Experienced programmer in C, C++ and/or Pythond
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex technical problems and deliver technical projects 
  • Capable of working with cross-functional disciplines, including external stakeholders and clients 
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills 

Salary Range/Hourly Rate for Internships: The range of pay for internships is 25.00-51.00 per hour. Actual compensation will be determined based on location, and other factors permitted by law.

Rivian provides robust wellness benefits, and a medical insurance package for interns, their spouse or domestic partner, and children up to age 26. Coverage is effective on the first day of employment, and Rivian covers most of the premiums.
