To execute this plan, we are looking to add talented people to the team who are mission-driven and treat people well, improve our team by adding diverse perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have demonstrated exceptional results through a range of different pursuits, and have skill sets and experience that relate to this role.

SPARC has a wide variety of instrumentation and control (I&C) systems across the tokamak and supporting plant systems necessary for operation. The SPARC I&C team seeks a high performing I&C engineer and team leader to lead the design, implementation, testing, installation and commissioning of the tokamak I&C systems, including development of custom instrumentation and electronics. . Systems include coil power supplies, RF heating, fueling, vessel conditioning, diagnostics, magnets and tokamak structures instrumentation. These I&C systems must be integrated with the central I&C systems responsible for machine operations, orchestration, plasma control, machine protection, safety, access control, data acquisition and archiving.

CFS team members thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and have demonstrated exceptional results through a range of different pursuits. We all tightly align with our company values of integrity, execution, impact and self-critique. As we grow, we are looking to add talented people who are mission driven and bring diverse perspectives and new ways of solving problems.

At CFS, we deeply value diversity and are an equal opportunity employer by choice. We consider all qualified applicants equally for employment. As the owner of the Tokamak I&C systems, you will:

  • Grow the tokamak I&C engineering team
  • Lead and manage the design and development of individual tokamak I&C systems and components
  • Collaborate with system owners to ensure all necessary functions and interfaces are included in the design and implemented
  • Contribute to the functional and performance requirements, and review of, the central I&C systems
  • Work closely with other teams within I&C to ensure the successful production of whole, integrated control systems including the HMI and supervisory control
  • Coordinate and oversee the release of procurement packages, engineering and construction deliverables
  • Manage suppliers of components and integrated subsystems of the I&C systems
  • Coordinate and oversee implementation, testing, installation and commissioning of the I&C systems
  • Oversee virtual commissioning of the tokamak I&C systems against a simulation of the tokamak based of the digital twin and high-fidelity physics models
  • Ensure the design is completed in compliance with the Code of Record and established requirements
  • Report on and be accountable for progress to the head of I&C and the engineers responsible for the systems for which the I&C is being produced.
  • Supervise I&C engineers for systems including coil power supplies, RF heating, fueling, vessel conditioning, diagnostics, magnets and tokamak structures instrumentation.
  • The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

  • Seven or more years experience in instrumentation and control engineering or similar
  • Growing and leading a team
  • Development of I&C systems used for control of components and complete systems under a QA program
  • Custom instrumentation and electronics development
  • Interlocks, safety and protection functions
  • Leader for a team of I&C engineers
  • Thorough knowledge of hardware and software needed to provide appropriate control system design
  • Understanding of the safety risks of high power systems
  • Ability to clearly express and critique ideas
  • Attention to detail
  • Emphasis on elegance and simplicity over complexity
  • Drive towards commercially viable solutions
  • Additional preferred experience and/or qualifications:

  • Understanding of how tokamaks and their key systems work and interact with the plasma control and data systems
  • Installation and system startup
  • Design at the appropriate scale, processing of 10,000+ I/O points and management of many hundreds of interfaces
  • Effects of extreme environments, such as cryogenic temperatures, ultra-high vacuum, electromagnetic noise, strong magnetic fields and radiation on measurement and control systems
  • Practical experience of applying national and international codes and standards to design solutions
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
  • Perform activities such as stooping, climbing, typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time
  • Dedication to safety to mitigate hazards that may include heat, cold, noise, and strong magnets
  • Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call occasionally
