The Magnet Test Engineering team will be responsible for testing all SPARC superconductor magnets and magnet subassemblies, from initial low-volume R&D to full-scale production, to validate that their performance meets SPARC operational requirements.

This individual is responsible for design definition and implementation of all PLC, SCADA, and HMI code required for command and control of the equipment in the magnet test facility. This role will work closely with engineers familiar with the expected test operations to ensure that the HMI is developed in a way that makes the operations as reliable, repeatable, and free from human error as possible. This role will also be responsible for designing and implementing robust health monitoring systems and automated safety responses, to support efficiency goals in test rate. This role should be familiar with industry standards and best practices, and software should follow these design rules, while also adhering to company-specific standards.

This individual will also be part of a crew of operators responsible for running all magnet tests reliably, repeatably, and safely.

This team member will:

  • Design definition and implementation of all PLC, SCADA, and HMI code required for command and control of test facility equipment
  • Interfacing closely with operations engineers to ensure an HMI designed with reliable, repeatable, and free from human error tests as the ultimate objective
  • Design and implementation of health monitoring systems and automated safety responses
  • Creation and presentation of design reviews to technical audiences
  • Write, execute, and troubleshoot test plans and test procedures for control system commissioning and validation
  • Review and analyze test data, lead anomaly investigation and resolution, and present results to a team of physicists and engineers
  • Troubleshoot and resolve test discrepancies with a focus on continuous improvement
  • The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or science field is required; software engineering or controls engineering preferred
  • 2+ years' experience developing control systems involving PLC coding, SCADA, and HMI development from scratch
  • Familiarity with human factor design and best practices for HMI design
  • Experience working closely with the customer to ensure final product satisfies customer requirements
  • Experience taking products from R&D into production, including developing testing techniques to transition from manual to automated processes
  • Understanding of relevant industry standards and best practices
  • Experience with designing and commissioning new test facilities
  • Experience with developing and executing test procedures
  • Experience developing and effectively presenting comprehensive trade studies comparing the pros & cons of various technical approaches
  • Familiarity with electromagnetic fundamentals – voltage, current, resistance, Ohm’s Law, AC/DC, right-hand rule, solenoids, etc.
  • Excellent troubleshooting/problem-solving skills with great attention to detail
  • Strong desire to improve efficiency and throughput of processes
  • Effective at communicating technical topics to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • High self-motivation and drive to execute quickly
  • A can-do attitude and an eagerness to learn
  • Ability to think of innovative solutions to challenging problems
  • Willingness to challenge how things are typically done in search of better, more efficient methods
  • Additional experience and/or qualifications:

  • Experience with high field magnet testing, traditional or superconducting
  • Familiarity with Ignition SCADA
  • Familiarity with Beckhoff PLC hardware
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
  • Perform activities such as stooping, climbing, typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time
  • Dedication to safety to mitigate hazards that may include heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, high voltage, and cryogenics
  • Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call occasionally
