About the company:
Base is America’s next-generation power company. We’re rebuilding the foundation of modern civilization–electricity–by deploying a vast network of distributed batteries that is transforming today’s fragile, centralized grid into a resilient and abundant system. We are engineers, operators, and creatives solving some of the most complex, interdisciplinary challenges of our time.
This role will meld policy and technical expertise to shape the codes and standards that govern the products we design and manufacture. The objective will be to open new markets and product segments, and to improve the safety and effectiveness of our operations.
You will build and grow the Technical Policy team from scratch, becoming the principal external representative of the company in various venues such as code-making panels, technical committees, utilities, and AHJs. You will work closely with our compliance and hardware teams to develop strategies that support our engineering vision and goals.
What You’ll Do
Own the strategy and roadmap for the Technical Policy function at the company.
Get us involved with, and represent us before, code-making panels, technical committees, government bodies, and other bodies that affect codes and standards.
Advocate for physics-based, operationally rational, and pro-safety changes to existing codes and standards.
Draft memos and other documents for AHJs and utilities explaining the company’s compliance with existing standards.
Serve as the first line of defense for internal or external questions surrounding our technical compliance.
Advise on and draft reporting for hardware and compliance teams regarding changes, or potential changes, to standards that affect us.
What You'll Bring
Proven experience operating under residential and/or commercial codes and standards that govern energy storage and production, including IRC, UL, and NFPA standards.
Direct experience advocating for and ultimately changing a standard or code, or a utility’s or AHJ’s interpretation of a standard or code.
Strong organizational and interpersonal skills to coordinate across multiple teams and stakeholders.
Strong communication skills to effectively interface with regulators, utilities, and other external parties.
Analytical and data-driven mindset; comfort working with modern tools (e.g., SQL, dashboards, CRMs); and digging in and rolling up your sleeves as needed.
First Principles Thinking: Question assumptions. Principles > rules.
Operate at Base Pace: Focus on what matters, act quickly, and learn by doing.
Give & Get Feedback: Be direct, be humble, and maintain a growth mindset.
Everyone’s an Owner: Follow through on commitments and own results.
Strong Opinions, Loosely Held: Drive clarity and make calls with imperfect information.
Committed to the Mission: Rebuilding the grid is a big challenge. We work hard because we care deeply about the impact we’re creating. We work in-person. It’s not a 9-to-5. We are all-in.
Fun & Optimism Coexist with Grit: Collaboration and celebration coincide with the intensity of building real things.
