What You Will Be Doing:

In this role, you will work within a small team to maintain, update, and manage our system software and hardware. You must be resourceful in diagnosing and resolving problems in an efficient manner. Patience to communicate with teams and users of varying levels of technical knowledge and skill is a must.  This role is responsible for setting up and maintaining a system or specific components of a system (e.g., installing, configuring, and updating hardware and software; establishing and managing user accounts; overseeing or conducting backup and recovery tasks; implementing operational and technical security controls; adhering to organizational security policies and procedures; etc.).

Core Tasks:

  • Conduct functional and connectivity testing to ensure continuing operability.
  • Develop and document systems administration standard operating procedures.
  • Maintain baseline system security according to organizational policies.
  • Manage accounts, network rights, and access to systems and equipment.
  • Plan, execute, and verify data redundancy and system recovery procedures.
  • Provide ongoing optimization and problem-solving support.
  • Install, update, and troubleshoot systems/servers.
  • Check system hardware availability, functionality, integrity, and efficiency.
  • Comply with organization systems administration standard operating procedures.
  • Implement and enforce local network usage policies and procedures.
  • Manage system/server resources including performance, capacity, availability, serviceability, and recoverability.
  • Monitor and maintain system/server configuration.
  • Diagnose faulty system/server hardware.
  • Perform repairs on faulty system/server hardware.
  • Troubleshoot hardware/software interface and interoperability problems.

About You:

  • Ability to accurately define incidents, problems, and events in the trouble ticketing system.
  • Ability to apply cybersecurity and privacy principles to organizational requirements (relevant to confidentiality, integrity, availability, authentication, non-repudiation).
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with others.
  • Ability to develop, update, and/or maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Ability to function effectively in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to operate common network tools (g., ping, traceroute, nslookup).
  • Knowledge of
    • Cyber threats and vulnerabilities.
    • Cybersecurity and privacy principles.
    • File system implementations.
    • Information technology (IT) security principles and methods.
    • Measures or indicators of system performance and availability.
    • Network protocols such as TCP/IP, Dynamic Host Configuration, Domain Name System (DNS), and directory services.
    • Operating system command-line tools.
    • Organizational information technology (IT) user security policies (g., account creation, password rules, access control, etc.).
    • Performance tuning tools and techniques.
    • Principles and methods for integrating system components.
    • Server and client operating systems (g., Windows, Linux).
    • System administration, network, and operating system hardening techniques.
    • The enterprise information technology (IT) architecture.
    • Virtualization technologies and virtual machine development and maintenance.
  • Skills
    • Configuring and utilizing software-based computer protection tools (g., software firewalls, antivirus software, anti-spyware).
    • Correcting physical and technical problems that impact system/server performance.
    • Diagnosing connectivity problems.
    • Installing system and component upgrades.
    • Maintaining directory services. (g., Microsoft Active Directory, LDAP, etc.).
    • Operating system administration. (g., account maintenance, data backups, maintain system performance, install and configure new hardware/software, etc.).
    • Using virtual machines. (g., Microsoft Hyper-V, Citrix XenDesktop/Server, etc.).
  • 5+ years of experience in system administration.
  • Certifications addressing authentication and password management; permissions and user rights; critical security controls; defense-in-depth; DNS; incident handling fundamentals; network fundamentals; protecting data at rest; PKI; securing server services; vulnerability management; security templates and group policy; service packs, hotfixes, and backups; Active Directory.
