Role Description
We are looking for an experienced system controls engineering manager to lead the development of the software that will operate our multi-day storage system. This role covers a broad scope of control system design functions, including battery module management, load balancing, auxiliary system operation, communication interfaces, and functional safety. In addition to a strong background in engineering management, this individual must bring experience in control system simulation methodologies and expertise in software development. Collaboration with other engineers and managers throughout the Tech Team will be a regular part of the workflow, as this role will include a blend of technical development and cross-team coordination.

What You'll Do:
Devise a system control software architecture that includes advanced functions, communications, safety, and securityIdentify key technical resourcing needs then build and manage a team of controls engineers and software developers to implement the system control architectureDevelop control software for battery enclosure management, auxiliary/safety system operation, system coordination, and communication interfacesBuild battery control system models for power flow and auxiliary system algorithm developmentContribute to the software implementation of BMS control and state estimation algorithmsValidate control algorithms and software using SiL, MiL, HiL simulationsDevelop system control interfaces and integrate with power conversion, SCADA, and EMS solutions from third partiesCoordinate with external teams on product requirements, validation test plans, certifications, and manufacturing processes for software and control system componentsWhat You'll Bring:
BSc or greater in software engineering, electrical engineering, or similar10+ years industrial experience in controls software development; direct experience with grid-interactive energy storage systems is a plus3+ years experience in technical management in a product development environmentTrack record of tactical decision making, strategic planning, and successful team buildingExperience with model-based design (Simulink) and fluency in MIL, SIL, and HIL simulation methodologiesDeep experience with software development, particularly high-level languages including Python; familiarity with embedded systems and low-level languages is a plusSolid knowledge of electrochemistry, battery safety, and battery state estimation methodologies (SOC, SOH, SOE)Strong background in closed loop control systems (PID)Firm understanding of common industrial communication protocols and physical interfaces (e.g., Modbus, CANbus)Comfortable working with engineering tools such as CAN loggers, software debuggers, oscilloscopes, multimeters, and HV test equipmentExcellent analytical problem-solving skillsStrong technical communication skills, both written and verbal
