About the company:

Redwood Materials is an American clean energy company headquartered in Sparks, Nevada, focused on securing domestic supplies of critical battery materials and providing large-scale energy storage solutions. The company recycles end-of-life batteries to recover lithium, nickel, cobalt, and copper, creating one of the largest domestic sources of these critical minerals in the United States. Its operations support the broader transition away from reliance on foreign supply chains for materials essential to electric vehicles and energy storage systems. Through its Redwood Energy division, the company designs, integrates, and deploys large-scale energy storage systems for data centers and the national grid, utilizing both new and repurposed batteries to deliver cost-effective solutions. Redwood Materials partners with major automotive, technology, and energy companies including Volkswagen Group of America, Panasonic, GM Ultium Cells, Toyota, BMW, Amazon, Volvo, and Southern Company, reflecting its central role in the emerging domestic battery supply chain. Founded by former Tesla Chief Technology Officer JB Straubel, Redwood Materials was established with the mission of building a circular economy for batteries, reducing waste, lowering the carbon footprint of energy storage, and strengthening American energy independence. The company holds ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 certifications, underscoring its commitment to occupational health, safety, and environmental management standards.

About Redwood Materials

Redwood Materials was founded in 2017 by JB Straubel, co-founder and former CTO of Tesla, on a simple but radical idea: the critical minerals powering the energy transition already exist. They just need to come back. Today Redwood is the largest lithium-ion battery recycler in North America — recovering, refining, and redeploying critical minerals from end-of-life batteries back into the supply chain. On the energy side, Redwood has deployed the largest second-life battery project in the world, delivering power to AI data centers in months rather than years using proprietary energy architecture engineered entirely in-house. The company is profitable, the market it operates in is projected to grow 20 to 50 times over the next decade, and Redwood is the only company with the supply chain, the technology, and the operational scale to lead it.

Position Summary:

Redwood Materials is looking for a best-in-class electronics Supplier Industrialization Engineer (SIE) to help scale our printed circuit board assemblies (PCBAs) suppliers to meet our aggressive production ramp schedules for our novel energy generation product. This is a fully on-site role at the San Francisco R&D Space, with 30% international travel to supplier and CM sites. You will be responsible for ensuring all parts provided by your suppliers meet dimensional, functional, and reliability requirements. You will support ramping suppliers with detailed capacity analysis, process approvals, part qualifications, NPI builds, and ongoing supplier performance and audits. You are a doer, excited about getting your hands dirty and working in a dynamic, fast-paced setting with new technologies. The SIE will work closely with cross-functional partners in Supply Chain, Engineering, Finance, and Manufacturing to ensure that design and customer success targets are met.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support supplier audits (process, system, product) and risk assessments to help qualify new sources and ensure readiness for mass production
  • Partner with GSMs, Design Engineering, and suppliers to align specifications, tolerance stack-ups, test coverage, and process controls
  • Review dimensional and quality reports, first article inspections, and other process control data to ensure part compliance
  • Execute PPAP/FAI activities and help define incoming inspection criteria based on part criticality, GD&T, and critical-to-quality key characteristics
  • Support supplier non-conformance resolution, drive 8D investigations, and follow through with verification of effectiveness activities with vendors
  • Maintain supplier scorecards with clear KPIs such as yield, PPM, delivery performance, and DFM responsiveness
  • Support NPI builds and DFM/DFA feedback loops through early supplier engagement and pilot line walkthroughs
  • Help build and define a strong and capable network of vendor partners with robust process, technical capability, reliability, and capacity
  • Support make-vs-buy, dual sourcing, and localization efforts across global supply chains
  • Contribute to sourcing decisions, lead-time analysis, and manufacturing footprint strategies

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • S. in Engineering, Supply Chain, Business, Economics or equivalent technical background
  • S. in Industrial Engineering, Engineering Management, Supply Chain, and/or MBA a plus
  • 5+ years of supplier quality, industrial engineering, process controls, or other related experience, ideally in automotive, industrial hardware, or other high-volume electronics manufacturing environments
  • Strong understanding of PCBA manufacturing processes (SMT, through-hole wave and selective soldering, reflow oven profiles, test strategies, etc.)
  • Strong proficiency in statistics, reading schematics, component drawings, and developing manufacturing processes for high volume capacity and quality targets
  • Familiarity with APQP, PPAP, SPC, DFMEA/PFMEA, ISO, and AECQ quality systems
  • Highly collaborative, data-driven, and proactive; capable of thriving in fast-paced startup environments
  • Willingness to travel internationally to supplier and CM sites as needed (30%)
