ROLE SUMMARY:

  • Join a rapidly growing team of mechanical, electrical and controls engineers to develop a new high-performance: cost ratio propulsion system. Lead a core part of the system - an energy-dense, portable Lithium Ion battery pack product line.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead hardware design, validation and manufacturing scale-up of new, medium size and voltage, Lithium Ion battery pack consumer products
  • Leverage battery first principles and systems engineering skills to navigate the tradeoffs between chemistry, thermal, electrical, controls, safety, regulatory, aesthetic, convenience, etc factors into the design process and achieve innovative and best-in-class pack product designs.
  • Collaborate with other Rivian teams on the topics of cell supply chain, cell roadmaps, interconnect and BMS technologies, SOC and diagnostic algorithms
  • Be directly responsible for mechanical design and release of battery packs via CATIA, prototype builds and test programs
  • Directly or indirectly own 3D CAD, 2D manufacturing drawings, system model parameters, system schematics and other documentation for all aspects of the system
  • Play a lead role in vendor selection and be responsible for ongoing vendor technical management while partnering with supply chain and procurement teams
  • Build and maintain KPI / attribute scorecards throughout the design, test, development process
  • Mentor or manage engineers & technicians 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 7+ year track record of detailed design, manufacture, test, and certification of battery modules or packs
  • Strong engineering fundamentals in the areas of cell characteristics, failure modes, thermal, high current connections, sensing connections, structural design, shock and vibration
  • A high degree of spatial creativity and reasoning ability combined with impeccable 3D CAD & 2D drawing skills
  • Knowledge and deep experience with high volume manufacturing processes such as injection molding, die casting, extrusions, stamping, laser welding, automated assembly equipment/robotics
  • Skills in modeling or at least working closely with dedicated modeling engineers to predict these characteristics and influence design: cell charge / discharge kinetics and thermodynamics, thermal management, cell aging, fault detection, thermal runaway/propagation prevention, etc
  • Professional accomplishments executing designs from clean sheet through prototype, then pilot builds and finally production quantities
  • Formal mechanical engineering education, B.S. minimum, higher preferred
