About the company:

Moment Energy is a Canadian clean energy company that specializes in repurposing end-of-life electric vehicle (EV) batteries into commercial-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS). Their flagship product, the Luna BESS, gives used EV batteries a second life by transforming them into reliable energy storage solutions for commercial and industrial customers, helping to reduce electronic waste while providing practical energy infrastructure. The company manufactures its systems in British Columbia, Canada, and serves a range of industries including data centers, manufacturing, food and beverage, transportation, paper and forestry, and public institutions. Moment Energy's mission is rooted in sustainability and the circular economy, aiming to extend the useful life of EV batteries rather than allowing them to be discarded prematurely. By repurposing these batteries, the company simultaneously addresses two pressing environmental challenges: reducing battery waste and enabling the transition to cleaner, more resilient energy systems. Their Luna BESS is notably the first repurposed battery energy storage system in the world to achieve UL 1973, UL 9540, and UL 9540A safety certifications, underscoring their commitment to meeting rigorous industry standards. What sets Moment Energy apart is its combination of environmental mission and technical credibility, offering certified, deployment-ready systems designed for fast installation and seamless integration into existing electrical infrastructure. Their solutions help businesses reduce peak demand charges, ensure backup power during grid disruptions, and support commercial EV charging fleets, making them a versatile partner for organizations seeking both cost savings and improved energy resilience.

About Moment Energy

Independent energy is here. Help us deploy it.

Energy should be free.  Free from aging grids, fragile supply chains, and unnecessary extraction. At Moment Energy, we’re building a world where clean power is abundant, affordable, and uninterrupted for everyone.

The world doesn’t need another promise about energy; it needs proof that a freer future is possible. Moment Energy is the pragmatic liberator of power, the only company certified to turn the largest untapped energy supply into independent energy.

Now is the moment. While the industry scraps millions of batteries with decades of life left, we put them to work by repurposing large-format batteries into advanced battery energy storage systems that deliver real-world impact.

We were told second-life batteries would never be safe enough or scalable enough. We didn’t argue, we engineered the solution. Today, Moment Energy delivers 5x the energy density and holds the certifications required to deploy energy independence at scale.

Now is the moment. Join us.

The Opportunity

Moment Energy is seeking a Senior R&D Test Technician to lead complex validation testing and laboratory operations. As our most senior R&D technician, you'll support advanced testing of battery energy storage systems, including high-voltage battery testing, thermal runaway testing, and power electronics validation.

Working with minimal supervision, you'll partner with Senior Validation & Verification (V&V) Engineers to design test setups, establish safety boundaries, and develop data collection systems for new test protocols. You'll also serve as a technical resource within the R&D lab by mentoring junior technicians and supporting safe, efficient, and high-quality laboratory operations.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Partner with Senior Validation & Verification (V&V) Engineers to design, build, and troubleshoot complex test rigs, including Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) systems, high-power battery cycler platforms, and dynamometers (dynos).
  • Safely execute high-risk tests, including short-circuit, overcharge, and mechanical abuse testing, while following established safety procedures, emergency protocols, and Arc Flash PPE requirements.
  • Perform failure analysis on prototypes and isolate component-level failures involving PCBs, Battery Management Systems (BMS), and battery modules.
  • Review raw test data, identify sensor errors and anomalies, and prepare technical summaries to support engineering design decisions.
  • Maintain laboratory calibration records, manage sensor inventory, and mentor Level 1 and Level 2 technicians on laboratory safety and best practices.

The Candidate

We’re looking for individuals with the following traits, skills, and experiences:

  • Completed a 3-year Advanced College Diploma in Mechatronics, Electronics, or Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering with 3+ years of dedicated hands-on laboratory or testing experience.
  • 5+ years of experience working in an R&D test lab, power electronics testing facility, EV testing environment, advanced aerospace or defense validation lab, or a similar product development environment.
  • Experience designing, building, commissioning, and troubleshooting complex engineering test setups and validation equipment.
  • Advanced troubleshooting skills involving embedded systems, including CAN bus, Modbus, and Ethernet communication.
  • Strong understanding of high-power and high-voltage electrical safety practices, including CSA Z462 and NFPA 70E.
  • Proficiency with system automation tools and advanced laboratory instrumentation.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical documentation skills, with the ability to interpret complex engineering test data.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to mentor junior technicians and work effectively within multidisciplinary engineering teams.

Nice-to-Have Experience:

  • Experience working with lithium-ion battery systems, battery energy storage systems (BESS), or renewable energy technologies.
  • Experience supporting Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) systems, battery cycler platforms, or advanced power electronics validation.
  • Familiarity with environmental chambers, vibration testing, or other environmental qualification methods.
  • Experience supporting prototype development, engineering validation, or new product introduction (NPI).
  • Experience developing laboratory procedures, test standards, or continuous improvement initiatives.

Why join us?

  • Today, we’re delivering 5x the energy density and have all the certifications needed to ship energy independence to the world.
  • Be part of a mission-driven company focused on creating sustainable energy solutions and making a positive impact on the world.
  • Collaborate closely with passionate co-founders and a team committed to innovation and excellence.
  • Contribute to building and scaling a company from the ground up, where your work will have a direct and meaningful impact.
  • Thrive in a workplace that values collaboration, wellness, and celebrating successes, with regular company socials, fitness sessions, and more.

We're a fast-paced and dynamic team.

Every day you'll be taking on a new challenge and learning something new. You'll take on a wide breadth of tasks and contribute to disrupting the battery industry. You'll be part of a tight-knit team that is working together to save the planet! Fun, health, and wellness are incorporated into our daily schedule and we encourage all our team members to bring innovative ideas to the table to create an interactive workplace.

Safety is our Foundation

We prioritize the safety of our products, customers, employees, and the general public above all else.  From the workshop to the field, we maintain the highest standards for our batteries in testing manufacturing and deployment, and daily operations. Safety is not only about procedures—it is about vigilance, responsibility, and speaking up when something does not feel right.

Safety is everyone's responsibility. We follow safety protocols, use proper equipment, and continuously improve our systems to prevent risks before they occur. If something is unsafe, we stop work and address it.

Safety also means protecting our colleagues, customers, and communities by designing reliable products, maintaining safe workspaces, and ensuring our work is done carefully and responsibly.

We prioritize open and honest communication to foster mutual understanding, strengthen knowledge sharing, and reduce miscommunication within the team. We admit when we’ve made a mistake, and remedy our actions. We transparently communicate outcomes whether good, bad, or unexpected.

We Think and Act like Owners:

We’re self-starters that proactively embrace new challenges along with personal and collective ownership of responsibilities in the organization. We focus on growth, not titles, and we do what needs to be done.

We Treat Everyone with Respect:

We actively listen, share openly, and work together towards common goals. We treat one another with mutual respect to cultivate an inclusive environment where everyone feels accepted, supported, and heard. We keep an open mind and are willing to learn.
