Form Energy is a team of passionate people tackling the challenge of climate change through transformationally low cost energy storage.  Our team members are active learners who enjoy working on tough technology problems in massive markets and embody our values of humanity, excellence and creativity. The company is backed by a diverse set of committed investors and we have raised over $360M to date.

Role Description
We are looking for an experienced Project Engineer to lead and execute various critical projects to the anode manufacturing scale up. Organizationally, this role falls under the Advanced Manufacturing team, but will operate cross-functionally with Supply Chain. This position will be the critical link between various teams in both our MA and PA facilities, as well as external partners as we scale up the manufacturing of iron-based anodes through a combination of bench-scale testing, pilot deployment and industrial trials.

The primary role is to lead the development of the upstream portion of Form’s anode manufacturing process. The scope will span from iron ore mineral processing to post-reduction processing. The objective is to continuously ramp production of iron material suitable for use in batteries with desirable properties, as determined by mechanical and electrochemical performance requirements.

Practically, the incumbent will be involved in a number of concurrent projects - some as project leads, some as participants and some as advisor. The scope of these projects will vary widely but will certainly involve thermodynamic calculations and modeling, equipment design and modification, trials planning, execution and data analysis. Specific projects will include leveraging existing iron processes assets (with limited but effective modifications) and enabling an aggressive iron supply schedule to meet our commercialization goals. In parallel, learnings will be incorporated into long-term high-volume solutions, which will require that new iron production assets are brought on-line with Form as the primary consumer.

This position has a high potential for growth. As the scope of these projects increase, it is anticipated that the Project Engineer will manage a larger portfolio of activities and build a team of engineers to support project execution.

Form Energy is committed to equitable compensation and we offer a generous benefits package to make sure you have the support you need. We cover 100% of employee premiums and 80% of dependent premiums for medical, dental, and vision insurance for full time employees. We offer a flexible Paid Time Off program and every employee, regardless of gender identity or expression, is eligible for 12 weeks of paid parental bonding leave. We offer a 401k and all employees are granted stock options. A full listing of our benefits is available on our careers page.

At Form Energy, we are working toward a 100% renewable energy future for everyone in the world. We are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all our employees and are seeking to build a team that reflects the diversity of the people we hope to serve with our revolutionary products. Form Energy is proud to be an equal opportunity employer.

What You'll Do:

  • The primary responsibility of this position is to accelerate and de-risk the scale up anode manufacturing through the execution of various projects at the lab / pilot and industrial scales. The ultimate goal is to develop meaningfully unique IP solutions that will ensure the commercial success of Form Energy and make a positive impact to the planet
  • Team with Supply Chain to identify, evaluate and advance various iron procurement and processing paths to support both the near term deployments and the rapid growth plan
  • Identify process levers in the existing iron processing assets that influence critical electrochemical performance, and develop the tools (modeling and experimental) to predict and verify performance improvements
  • Interface with steel industry partners. Oversee the execution of partner’s projects involving new or modified iron processing equipment, acting as the primary contact point for Form and review/approve all  technical specifications
  • Always act with environmental, health and safety principles in mind
  • Be accountable for the completion of various projects on time, on budget and at the highest level of excellence
  • What You'll Bring:

  • Chemical Engineering degree with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in an industrial setting. The ability to read, understand and develop / modify P&ID’s is non-negotiable, as well as practical experience designing processes and selection of process equipment. A high command of thermodynamics, heat transfer and chemical reactions is mandatory
  • A safety mindset, a practical experience in safety regulations (OSHA or MSHA) and knowledge of SJA, JHA, PHA, HAZOP, LOPA and other safety assessment tools
  • Advanced theoretical and practical knowledge of process engineering design and equipment, including compressors, heat exchangers, chemical reactors etc. Experience with design, selection and operation of chemical processing plants is highly desirable
  • A minimum of 3 years of R&D projects execution. Experience in project and portfolio management of lab / pilot scale development activities is a strong preference
  • A balanced appreciation for both the incredibly slow, cautious nature of an established industry like steel, juxtaposed with the rapid pace and inherent uncertainty of green technologies and new product introduction
  • Creativity, flexibility, adaptation and the ability to multi-task in order to successfully manage  different and often simultaneous projects
  • Ability to perform under pressure and within time constraints; sometimes with incomplete data or information
  • Integrity, honesty and a keen appreciation of bias are paramount to the success of this role
  • Clear communication (verbal and written) with teammates and the ability to work cross-functionally with a collaborative spirit. Ability to develop, write standard operating procedures and training documents
