Our mission is simple: to eradicate the use of toxic vegetable oils in our food system.
These destructive oils are hidden in everything, from salad dressings and condiments, to fast food and Michelin-starred restaurants, accounting for 20% of our daily calories.

We believe a healthier world is possible with better oils and fats.
Vegetable oils account for 20% of our daily calories and have been linked to chronic disease, inflammation, obesity, and cognitive decline, as well as deforestation, biodiversity loss, and climate change, with no end in sight.
Vegetable oils are now the most consumed food in the world behind rice and wheat and are the fastest growing sub sector of global agriculture. More vegetable oil is consumed globally than all beef, chicken, cheese, and shrimp, combined.

Zero Acre Farms is on a mission to replace destructive vegetable oils in the food system with healthier, more sustainable oils and fats made by fermentation. Our first product, Cultured Oil, just launched DTC as we look ahead to retail, foodservice, and food manufacturing expansion.

The Role
Zero Acre Farms is seeking an experienced process development engineer to support development and commercialization of new products. As a member of the Process Development and Scale Up team, the incumbent will conduct DSP process development at bench and pilot scale, development and utilize Techno-Economic analyses, transfer processes between sites, and support successful implementation of production processes at commercial scale.
Responsibilities include design and execution of experiments in our internal laboratory as well as coordinating work at external CRO/CMOs. This hands-on position will also contribute to building out our internal DSP Process Research laboratory capabilities.
Responsibilities
- Conduct DSP process development at pilot scale, transfer processes to commercial scale, and support initial commercial scale production.
- Perform hands-on downstream processing (DSP) process research at lab scale to support commercially-scalable process research and development.
- Conduct process and/or equipment testing at CRO/CMO and equipment vendor facilities.
- Support development and maintenance of Techno-Economic analyses for Zero Acre Farms’ products, providing process definition, experimental data, and process models as necessary.
- Establish and expand DSP laboratory capabilities as needed, including selecting, acquiring and setting up equipment.
You and Your Experience
Minimum Qualifications:
- PhD in Chemical Engineering or relevant field with 5-10 years of industry bioprocess development and scale up experience.
- Demonstrated experience in developing DSP separation and purification processes for fermentation broth.
- Demonstrated experience in scaling processes from lab to pilot or plant scale, including performing on-site support.
- Experience with a range of commercially-applicable unit operations such as cell isolation, extraction, liquid-liquid and liquid-solid separations, distillation, drying, filtration, chromatography, etc.
- Hands-on experience conducting development work at lab and/or pilot scale.
- Thorough knowledge of chemical engineering principles and familiarity with fermentation and biochemical processes.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Desire to work in a fast-moving team-based environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with food-grade development and production.
- Strong background in chemistry.
- Experience building and/or utilizing Techno-Economic Analyses and Process Models.

A Note From Our Founders
