Your role and your team:

You will report directly to the Manager of the Aircraft Structure Team. The Aircraft Structure Team is responsible for designing and developing the structural components of our aircraft across the entire life cycle - from concept through to detailed design, testing and into serial production.

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer you will be part of an interdisciplinary IPT (Integrated Project Team) responsible for the design of the landing gear system and interfaces, and if needed supporting additional systems of our Lilium Jet from prototype into serial production.

From mechanical components design to systems development you'll play a key role in bringing our innovative aircraft to life.

 

Your Day to Day:

  • Conceptual system architecture through detailed design of the landing gear mechanical system in concert with other engineering teams and departments, with open mind towards innovative solutions that optimize the design from a holistic point of view
  • Design landing gear kinematics and synthesize mechanisms for energy absorption, shimmy suppression and crash behavior. Contribute to the design of landing gear subsystems e.g. wheel and brake system
  • Optimize for Landing gear macro-parameters including Vertical Access Travel (VAT), Shock absorber travel (SAT), rake angle and geometry
  • Optimize for shock absorber characteristics including spring damping curves, architecture and technology selection
  • Apply aerospace best practice design principles, design for manufacturing, design for cost
  • Interact with the loads department and the interfacing systems during the landing gear design iterations to minimize the loads into the structure and to the interface with the airframe
  • Coordinate external suppliers activities, from mechanical design, manufacturing methods selection, requirements definition to design validation and verification related activities
  • Define the external and internal mechanical interfaces together with other engineers in the team and with interfacing systems
  • Design of metallic and possibly composite structures with attention towards high volume production
  • Contribute to the development of plans for integrated systems testing, test plan writing, and report authoring
  • Assist in the development of manufacturing, integration, and test processes and procedures
  • Support the system development from concept to production, resolving any design, manufacturing and assembly issues along the way
  • Contribute to defining requirements including landing gear performance requirements
  • Create certification related documentation
  • Check and approval of technical 2D drawings for manufacturing release
  • Support the team members in any structure sizing, design and manufacturing related topics
  • Constantly learn new things – and share them with your team members
  • Work on any ad hoc related projects or tasks

Your Profile:

  • University degree in Aerospace Engineering or Mechanical/Vehicle Engineering (aerospace specialization, MSc/M.Eng preferred)
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in the aerospace industry is required
  • Excellent understanding and demonstrated experience in general and landing gear design principles and technical correlations is required
  • Strong knowledge of a CAD system is required (Siemens NX is preferred)
  • Strong knowledge of ISO GPS (alternatively ASME GD&T) and overall good drafting skills are highly beneficial
  • Basic knowledge with PDM/PLM systems (Teamcenter or equivalent) is beneficial
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to integrate state-of-the-art design and manufacturing methods into product concepts and designs is required
  • Experience with working with various suppliers and managing deliverables is required
  • Strong motivation to work on a new aircraft technology and market, with passion for innovation while pushing to have high aerospace standard practices and proactivity in everyday tasks problem solving is required
  • High level of self-reliance with the ability to work in a team, as well as autonomously is required
  • Target-oriented, driven work style with analytic problem-solving skills is required
  • Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment is required
  • Experience with composite structural design is beneficial
  • Basic knowledge of Fibersim is beneficial
  • Good hand calculation abilities and FEA experience is beneficial
  • Experience developing and working to system requirements is beneficial
  • Strong motivation to help build mechanical design processes is beneficial
  • Fluent English language skills are essential, fluent German or any other language is beneficial
