As the Sr. Manager of Zoox's IT Platform team, you will lead a dynamic team responsible for architecting, deploying, and managing the foundational technology infrastructure that powers Zoox's autonomous vehicle and AI research efforts. Your role will encompass overseeing the development and maintenance of our critical IT infrastructure, including data centers, cloud environments, high-performance computing, virtualization, storage solutions, databases, and essential services. You will ensure these systems are scalable, reliable, and capable of supporting the company's ambitious projects, with a particular focus on petabyte-scale storage systems vital for our cutting-edge robotics and AI research.

In this role, you will:

  • Manage managers and a 25+ person engineering team to align the IT Platforms Team with the company’s strategic objectives, ensuring that our technology backbone is robust and flexible enough to accommodate future growth and innovation
  • Play a crucial role in mentoring and guiding your leaders and team; fostering an environment of continuous learning and improvement
  • Interface with stakeholders, provide strategic insights and act as a thought leader in adopting technology-driven solutions that enhance our operational efficiency and drive our business forward.
  • Possess a solid understanding of distributed systems, containerization, and cloud infrastructure, complemented by a proven track record of building and operating scalable, highly available services.
  • Have the ability to navigate complex technical challenges, coupled with your strategic business acumen, making you adept at leading through change and influencing cross-functional teams to achieve common goals.
  • Qualifications

  • 10+ years of relevant technical experience with 5+ years of experience in leading engineering teams and managing managers
  • Demonstrated leadership in managing teams responsible for developing and operating high-volume, highly available, and scalable services. 
  • Hands-on experience in designing, deploying, and managing software solutions in cloud environments is crucial for navigating the technical challenges of high-performance computing systems
  • Expertise in distributed systems, virtualization, and container technologies. A solid understanding of the architecture of distributed systems and experience with containerization tools (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) is essential for building and scaling HPC environments
  • Strong knowledge of cloud infrastructure and services (AWS, GCP, Azure) and infrastructure as code (e.g., Terraform)
  • Proficiency in configuring, deploying, and managing cloud resources through code is vital for creating efficient and scalable HPC environments
  • Bonus Qualifications

  • BS/MS Degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related technical field
  • Experience with AI/ML workloads on HPC systems
  • Familiarity with deploying and managing AI and machine learning workloads in a high-performance computing environment highlights a candidate's ability to handle cutting-edge computational challenges
  • Software engineering experience with Cloud Native solutions
  • Experience owning and operating high-volume, highly available, scalable, services on top of cloud providers (AWS)
  • Experience building and/or configuring Cloud infrastructure and services (on-prem or public) through code, such as Terraform
  • Built highly available, scalable, and reliable platform that is essential to the business
