About the company:
Our mission
At Vertical Aerospace, we are pioneering the way for electric aviation. The VX4, our eVTOL (electric, vertical, take-off and landing), 'zero emissions' aircraft will set a new safety standard for how we will navigate the sky.
We won't realise our mission following the same legacy processes and traditions our predecessors followed, instead, we want to 'redefine' aerospace best practices.
We are growing quickly from a prototype business to a scaling SME, and the next few years will be critical to our success and delivering on our ambitious goals of having the VX4 in service by 2030.
What to expect
As a HV & LV Electrical Engineer Team Lead, you will join a growing team of passionate individuals whose primary focus is to lead the definition, integration, and verification of the high-voltage and low-voltage distribution and protection systems across the aircraft powertrain architecture.
A typical day could range from developing electrical architecture for the aircraft's HV and LV distribution systems to defining protection strategies, to collaborating across disciplines including battery systems, propulsion, avionics, and thermal management to deliver an integrated solution.
The ability to quickly figure things out and make decisions at pace as well as act as a team mentor will all factor into this role's impact and your success.
What you'll do
You will be responsible for leading the electrical architecture development of the aircraft's HV (>200 VDC) and LV distribution systems.
You will define and drive design of HV and LV load protection strategies, including contactors, SSPC (Solid-State Power Controllers), fuse coordination, and solid-state protection technologies.
You will ensure correct implementation of creepage and clearance requirements across the distribution architecture.
You will be developing strategies for LV load analysis and power management under various flight conditions.
You will be responsible for owning the development and integration of power distribution units (PDUs), including electro-mechanical and PCB-based assemblies.
You will oversee protection coordination studies across the electrical architecture to ensure selectivity and system resilience.
What you'll bring
Master's or Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Electronics, or Aerospace Engineering.
10+ years of experience in electrical system design, preferably in the aerospace, automotive, or railway sectors.
Proven expertise in HV system design (>200 VDC), including fuse sizing, cable selection, and safety strategies.
In-depth knowledge of SSPC technology, solid-state protection devices, and power electronics interfacing.
Strong understanding of electrical clearance and creepage, insulation coordination, and arc flash safety.
Hands-on experience with DC/DC converter integration and thermal implications for HV-LV transitions.
Demonstrated experience in electrical system analysis including load analysis, fault current studies, and protection coordination.
Familiarity with regulatory standards such as DO-160, DO-254, and ARP4754A/ARP4761.
