Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.

CFS collaborates with MIT to leverage decades of research combined with groundbreaking new high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. HTS magnets will enable compact fusion power plants that can be constructed faster and at lower cost. Our mission is to deploy these power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. To that end, CFS has assembled a team of leaders in tough tech, fusion science, and manufacturing with a track record of rapid execution. Supported by the world’s leading investors, CFS is uniquely positioned to deliver limitless, clean, fusion power to combat climate change. To implement this plan, we are looking to add dedicated people to the team who treat people well, improve our work by adding multifaceted perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have achieved outstanding results through a range of pursuits, and have skills and experience related to this role.

The Senior HTS Test Engineer will be responsible for ensuring reliable and repeatable execution of HTS performance testing for customers throughout the organization. This includes QA acceptance testing of incoming tape from suppliers as well as testing for internal customers which informs R&D and production activities.

HTS testing uses test equipment which combines deep cryogenics, high vacuum, high power, and high field to take electrical performance measurements. While this role would not need to be an expert in any of these individual regimes, the HTS Test Engineer would need to understand enough about how the equipment works at the system-level to be able to safely perform troubleshooting activities which can isolate the root cause of any problems, in order to identify the appropriate technical expert that should be pulled in. For this system-level understanding, this role should be able to read and interpret fluid schematics (P&IDs), electrical diagrams, wiring lists, data acquisition systems, and CAD files, amongst other machine documentation. Familiarity with how software works in order to better understand and diagnose system behavior is a must.

This role would be responsible for defining systems that plan and track status of testing and make hardware, software, and process improvements. This role is responsible for collecting the data that identifies inefficiencies, proposing changes that address those inefficiencies (without sacrificing the quality of the collected data), and implementing approved changes.

CFS team members thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and have demonstrated exceptional results through a range of different pursuits. We all tightly align with our company values of integrity, execution, impact and self-critique. As we grow, we are looking to add talented people who are mission driven and bring diverse perspectives and new ways of solving problems.

At CFS, we deeply value diversity and are an equal opportunity employer by choice. We consider all qualified applicants equally for employment. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, ancestry, citizenship status, protected veteran status, religion, physical or mental disability, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, or any other basis protected by law, ordinance, or regulation.

This team member will:

  • Be the responsible engineer for all current HTS test equipment- act as technical expert on these machines, provide technical support for technicians, drive repairs and improvements.
  • Be required to have general knowledge of the entire systems (hardware, software, electronics) but would not necessarily require deep technical knowledge of any subjects (i.e. you can pull on other technical experts as required)
  • Identify opportunities for improvements to quality, reliability, pace, and efficiency of all test operations
  • Ensures tests performed collect the data required for the data end-user
  • Define and implement systems to ensure test equipment is reliable and maintainable, including determining sparing strategies for critical equipment, implementing error-proofing solutions (poka-yoke), and more
  • Own process development and operation for the integration & testing of HTS magnets from initial low-volume R&D to full-scale production
  • Write, execute, and troubleshoot electrical test plans and procedures for HTS magnets
  • Be responsible for design, procurement, and commissioning of all test facility equipment (power, cryogenics, vacuum) necessary to test HTS magnets at the required production rate
  • Develop all design reviews, wiring lists, P&IDs, schematics, tooling, data acquisition systems, and operations software
  • Review and analyze test data, lead anomaly investigation and resolution, and present results to a team of physicists and engineers
  • Troubleshoot and resolve integration & test discrepancies with a focus on continuous improvement
  • Establish and execute plans for future factory expansion, including capital equipment and floor layouts
  • The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or science field is required; electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or applied physics degree preferred
  • 5+ years' experience as an engineer operating or maintaining complex electromechanical systems, preferably in a production setting
  • 5+ years’ experience testing, troubleshooting, and debugging electronics hardware and test software
  • Experience with developing and executing test procedures
  • Experience taking products from R&D into production, including developing testing techniques to transition from manual to automated processes
  • Experience building a data-driven argument, to ensure all decisions are made according to the data
  • Experience debugging electrical system through the use of a multimeter and/or an oscilloscope
  • Excellent troubleshooting/problem-solving skills with great attention to detail
  • Strong desire to improve efficiency and throughput of processes
  • Effective at communicating technical topics to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • High self-motivation and drive to execute quickly
  • A can-do attitude and an eagerness to learn
  • Ability to think of innovative solutions to challenging problems
  • Willingness to challenge how things are typically done in search of better, more efficient methods
  • Additional experience and/or qualifications:

  • Experience with high field magnet testing, traditional or superconducting
  • Experience with designing fluid systems – P&IDs, component selection, ASME design codes
  • Experience with cryogenic equipment design and use for liquid nitrogen and supercritical helium use – vacuum jacketed equipment, cryocoolers, phase separators, cold traps
  • Experience with high vacuum equipment design and use – roughing pumps, turbopumps, ion gauges, residual gas analyzers
  • Experience with high voltage and high current power equipment design and use – power supplies, water cooled cables, insulation
  • Familiarity with reading and understanding computer code (Python, C/C++, Java)Familiarity with lean manufacturing methods
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
  • Perform activities such as stooping, climbing, typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time
  • Dedication to safety to mitigate hazards that may include heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, high voltage, and cryogenics
  • Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call occasionally
