Join the Software Team based in Bristol as a Senior Data Engineer and help us to achieve our mission of pioneering electric aviation.

What success will look like for you, as a Senior Data Engineer?

As a Senior Data Engineer you will be supporting the architecture, deployment and optimisation of flight test data stores as well as architecture and prototyping of cloud services for our certified aircraft. You will also be responsible for secure and scalable data pipelines from aircraft and test rigs to the cloud and for processes and pipelines for data transformation. As part of your role as a senior engineer you will also mentor other engineers on all things data and provide support and training for other engineering teams e.g. python scripting, data processing.

You will be working closely with a variety of engineering teams, including the software, data & comms and rig test teams as well as other external suppliers such as our database provider.

You will report directly into the Software Engineering Manager and be a key member of the software team, supporting the continued development of our in-house expertise, specialist knowledge and capabilities.

What would we like you to bring.

We want you to be successful in your role and in order to achieve this you will need a solid understanding of software fundamentals, networks and data as well as deep knowledge of database technologies and modern tool chains and practical experience of optimising data systems.

We are looking for individuals with a track record of delivering high quality software. A passion for sustainable aviation is also a big plus.

Ideally you will have completed either a Bachelor's/Master’s/PhD in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or closely related STEM discipline and have circa 5+ years of relevant data engineering experience. You will need to have a solid understanding of relational and NoSql database technologies e.g.MS-SQL PostgreSQL, MongoDB. Including, data model design, schema management, infrastructure deployment and performance optimisation.

Strong python development skills, including python data stack - numpy, pandas/polars, etc is essential and experience in maintaining client-side python libraries is a plus.

You will also have some familiarity with design and implementation of ETL pipelines and experience working as part of an agile software team using modern tooling and CI/CD (e.g. JIRA, Git, Azure DevOps) and with automated testing and CI/CD pipelines.

Additionally, you will have experience with Linux development and containerisation and will be familiar with infrastructure as code concepts and frameworks (e.g. Terraform, Ansible) and with cloud security fundamentals and best practices.

Some of the desirables but not essential skills include: Experience working with time series databases e.g. Influx, KX, Druid, Timescale, proficiency with at least one backend programming language (e.g. TypeScript, C#, C++, Rust), hands-on experience with cloud computing platform providers (Azure / AWS) and with Kubernetes application development e.g. CNCF ecosystem, Flux, Helm, Grafana, Loki, Prometheus and an understanding of distributed messaging architectural patterns e.g. MQTT, REST, gRPC.
