The Senior Cost Engineer, Electromechanical is a core member of FAB4 teams: Engineering, Purchasing, Finance, and Cost Engineering. This position is expected to Identify the most efficient way to meet performance specifications for high voltage, low voltage, and electrotechnical assemblies on current and future electric BEV vehicles. Another key responsibility is to identify lower cost, lower complexity, and lower carbon alternatives to traditional electronic and electromechanical BEV systems. The Senior Cost Engineer will also supply cost data from the early design phase through sourcing, prototyping, and final supplier sourcing of parts and assemblies. The primary focus is HV, SoCs, controllers, inverters, traction motors, and other electronics but this role will also need to support stampings, plastics, assembly, and other vehicle subsystems.

The Senior Cost Engineer will support all electronics-related content of the BEV vehicle. The role goes beyond cost estimating of designed parts to working with FAB4 teams to optimize the electrical design and assembly of future BEV vehicles. 

REQUIREMENTS

  • Collaborate with engineering, purchasing, finance, design, and plant operations
  • Develop cost models, estimates, targets, make/buy, and ad hoc analyses
  • Promote green technologies: electric propulsion, lightweight/sustainable/environmentally friendly solutions
  • Interface with engineering, purchasing, and suppliers to reduce cost, weight, and timing
  • Work with engineering on a design to target approach in early product development planning
  • Ability to interact closely with electrical design engineering, software engineers, mechanical
  • engineers and related procurement buyers.
  • Subject matter expert in electronics but also estimates other areas due to interconnected parts/subsystems and overall department workload

QUALIFICATIONS

To successfully perform the typical tasks and duties of the position, the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities listed below are required:

  • Two to five years of direct OEM experience are required and two to five years of Tier-1 manufacturing experience is preferred.
  • Sales and or purchasing experience is a plus.
  • Electronics component cost knowledge includes but is not limited to discrete electronics, memory, printed circuit boards, SoCs, etc.
  • Strong knowledge of high voltage electromechanical vehicle systems as well as more traditional low voltage vehicle wiring, controllers, displays, sensors, cameras, etc.
  • Experience with electric drive, power conversion, and onboard charging systems.
  • Working knowledge of the latest silicon carbide inverter technologies.
  • In-depth knowledge of high voltage battery safety requirements.
  • Ground-up piece price and tooling experience in more than one of the following: low voltage and high voltage electronics, electronic control units, electric motors, battery packs, etc.
  • Experience in cost model creation, design to target, RFQ analysis, and negotiation
  • Create ground-up cost estimates for low voltage and high voltage electronics, electronic control units, electric motors, battery packs, etc.
  • Ground-up costing experience in more than one of the following: electronics, plastics, stamping, casting, machining, final assembly, interiors, seats, IPs, powertrain, etc.
  • Capability to independently create a BoM & BoP on a given commodity/design and assign a cost
  • Ability to thrive in and embrace a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent communication and collaborative skills.
  • Strategic thinking skills and detail-oriented work habits

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Economics, and or Finance is preferred

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Employees must be within a commutable distance to an assigned Rivian workplace location (or future location) and expected to report to this location on a regular cadence decided in partnership with the Hiring Manager. This can also include the ability to travel determined by project and business needs.
