About this Job

UPSIDE has experienced hypergrowth over the last two years and we are seeking an innovative individual who enjoys fast-paced growth and is passionate about changing the future of food. The R&D Scientist in cell culture media will be responsible for developing and running experimental designs to develop cell culture media formulations. The media development scientist will perform experiments, analyze and interpret data, communicate results, and make recommendations to drive research forward. The scientist will collaborate very closely with scientists and engineers from various functions such as process development and cell line development, and data experts to formulate and execute a strategy for scalable cell culture media formulation for cultivated meat. In addition, the scientist will mentor and train junior associates within the cell culture media team.

Duties Include

  • Performing lab scale (0.2 L - 3 L) bioreactor operations and cell culture experiments, including testing and iteration of novel media components, scale platforms and procedures.
  • Planning and executing cell culture experiments and analyzing complex data sets to understand metabolic flux within the cells using omics technologies. 
  • Planning and executing perfusion-based cell culture experiments to optimize cell culture media to support high yield processes.
  • Proficient data collection, interpretation, and analysis to determine the next steps alongside the project team/lead. 
  • Plans further experiments based on data and objectives.
  • Develops experiments in traditional and high throughput cell culture platforms at multiple scales (e.g. 96 well, shake flask, benchtop bioreactor).
  • Mentor and supervise others in areas of expertise.

About You

  • Ph.D. in cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, bioengineering or closely related science; or BS/MS candidates with 5+(BS) or 3+(MS) years of research and development experience in the biopharmaceutical, cell therapy, or similar industry are also encouraged to apply.
  • Industrial or academic cell culture media development experience.
  • Industrial or academic experience using omics approaches to optimize cell culture media and/or process.
  • Industrial or academic experience developing and implementing perfusion technologies at 0.2 L - 3 L scale.
  • Proficient at working with large data sets, MVDA and statistical analysis.
  • Proficient using SIMCA, JMP & Python for navigating and analyzing large data sets.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced and cross-functional environment.
  • Comfortable developing scientific knowledge base by learning new methods from peers, seminars and scientific literature.
  • Maintain scientific scholarship through internal and external networking and frequent literature reviews.

Desirable skills

  • Working knowledge/understanding of scale-up considerations for cell culture media/process.
  • Mammalian and/or avian cell culture and recombinant protein expression. e.g. generation of stable cell lines expressing relevant levels of a r-protein.
  • Experience with protein analysis methods (i.e, Western blot, FACS and immunocytochemistry.
  • Standard molecular biology techniques including molecular cloning, transfection, genomic and plasmid DNA purification, RNA isolation, PCR and RT-PCR/ddPCR and the ability to design basic and engineered recombinant protein expression constructs.
