About this Job

UPSIDE is seeking an innovative Process Development Scientist or Engineer, who enjoys fast-paced growth and is passionate about changing the future of food. This individual will be responsible for developing and executing cell culture experimental designs to understand and optimize novel cultivation processes. You will perform experiments, analyze and interpret data, communicate results, and make recommendations to drive forward a strategy for scalable, cultivated meat. As part of a talented team, you will collaborate closely with colleagues and scientists from other functions such as cell line and media development, process engineering, data scientists, and manufacturing. The ideal candidate will mentor junior associates and flourish in our dynamic and growing team.

Responsibilities include…

  • Lead and drive lab-scale bioreactor operations and cell culture harvest experiments, including testing of novel technologies, processes, and cultivation parameters.
  • Plan, execute, and analyze cultivation experiments with complex data sets to understand mass balances and metabolic shifts.
  • Proficient in data collection, interpretation, and analysis to determine the next steps with the project team/lead. 
  • Plan further experiments based on data and objectives.
  • Develops experiments in scaled-down manufacturing models and high throughput cell culture platforms.
  • Mentor and supervise others in areas of expertise.

About you…

  • Ph.D. in chemical engineering, bioprocessing, bioengineering, or closely related science; or BS/MS candidates with 5+(BS) or 3+(MS) years of research and development experience in the biopharmaceutical, cell therapy, or similar industry are also encouraged to apply.
  • Industrial or academic cell culture and process development experience.
  • Experience with JMP for navigating and analyzing large data sets.
  • Comfortable with traditional bioreactor scaling concepts and applying concepts to novel meat cultivation processes. 
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced and cross-functional environment.
  • Comfortable developing scientific knowledge base by learning new methods from peers, seminars, and scientific literature.
  • Maintain scientific scholarship through internal and external networking and frequent literature reviews.

Desirable skills

  • Working knowledge/understanding of scale-up considerations for large-scale bioreactors.
  • Mammalian and/or avian cell culture and recombinant protein expression.
  • Experience with designing and executing DOE-based experiments.

Who you’ll work with…

  • While we expect growth in all functions in the next 1-2 years, this role will most frequently interact with our Cell Line Development team, Cell Culture Media team, Food R&D team, and Technical Operations team.

  • Increased process understanding of the various cultivation processes at Upside Foods.
  • Proposals for IP around cultivated meat.
