Perfect Day was founded in 2014 to create delicious, nutritious dairy products that everyone can love. We’re using fermentation (not animals) to make dairy proteins that are the foundation for foods like ice cream, cheese and yogurt – all with the distinctive taste and textures that consumers demand, but without lactose or environmental downsides. Through partnerships with respected brands, we’re working to launch a whole range of dairy products that will help shape a humane, sustainable food system for future generations. 

Perfect Day is working to commercialize animal-free dairy protein products made through fermentation in flora. We are seeking an intelligent, motivated, enthusiastic Scientist  to join our Fermentation Process Development team. The ideal candidate will be driven to do what it takes to effectively contribute within a small and agile team in a fast paced, collaborative startup environment. 

The Successful Candidate will help design data driven experiments, implement procedures to increase fermentation reproducibility and throughput, and participate in the transfer of improved fermentation technology to manufacturing scale.

YOUR CONTRIBUTION:

  • Design, planning, and execution of lab scale fermentation experiments.
  • Data analysis, interpretation, and communication of experimental results.
  • Fermenter preparation; aseptic sample collection and processing.
  • Monitoring, troubleshooting and maintenance of fermenters and associated equipment.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and manage multiple projects plus your workload.
  • Responsible for authoring standard operating procedures and other supporting documentation.
  • Self-starter with good organizational skills; able to work effectively in cross-functional teams, root cause analysis, training and general communication.
  • KNOWLEGDE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • MS or PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology or related discipline with 1-2 years of industry experience. BS will be considered with 5 or more years of relevant  industry experience.  
  •  Industrial lab experience, including hands on experience with fermentation equipment. 
  • Ability to work in and maintain safe working conditions. 
  • Candidate must have excellent communication, organization and collaborative skills, and demonstrated ability to innovate, troubleshoot complex systems and thrive in a dynamic cross-functional team environment. 
  • ADDITIONAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS DESIRED, BUT NOT REQUIRED:

  • Hands on experience with a variety of bench scale fermentation units including steam in place (SIP) units and process control software. 
  • Experience working with fungal fermentations.  
  • Experience with Design of Experiments (DOE) methodology and biostatistics. 
  • Experience with data management and visualization tools i.e. JMP, Spotfire. 
  • Experience transferring technology to and/or from CRO, CMO and/or technology partners. 
  • Track record of developing and running highly accurate and precise fermentation processes. 
  • Independent thinker/performer that can also contribute and effectively interact within the team. 
  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Position requires the ability to stand or sit for prolonged periods, kneel, bend, and consistently lift up to 30 lbs.
