About the company:

Axle Energy is a UK-based energy technology company that provides a unified API platform enabling carmakers, EV charger manufacturers, battery systems, and heating and cooling providers to connect distributed home energy assets to electricity markets. Through its platform, companies can aggregate these assets into a coordinated virtual power plant (VPP), allowing flexible demand to be shifted and optimised in response to grid conditions. Axle handles the full stack from asset onboarding and optimisation to payment distribution, making it straightforward for hardware and energy brands to monetise flexibility without building bespoke grid integration infrastructure. Axle Energy's mission is closely aligned with the green energy transition. By turning everyday home assets such as electric vehicles, heat pumps, and batteries into grid-responsive resources, the company helps balance electricity networks that are increasingly reliant on intermittent renewable generation. This approach supports decarbonisation goals by reducing the need for fossil-fuel peaker plants and enabling higher penetrations of renewable energy, while also providing financial returns to end users and partner businesses. What distinguishes Axle Energy is its developer-first approach and breadth of asset coverage under a single, enterprise-grade API with over 99.9% uptime. The platform currently has 300,000 live devices connected and a flexibility pool of 2 GW of shiftable load capacity. Trusted by brands including Pod Point, Myenergi, and Easee, Axle has demonstrated the ability to drive regulatory change and deliver features rapidly. The company announced a $25 million Series A funding round led by Energize Capital, underscoring investor confidence in its market position.

Position Overview

Axle is seeking a Research Biologist to serve as a senior research scientist in the conduct and leadership of research focused on immunologic lung injury, using advanced molecular techniques — including next-generation sequencing, cell-free DNA and cell-free RNA analysis, and high-density proteomics platforms — to support early diagnosis of lung injury, disease monitoring, and personalized treatment for patients who have or are at risk of serious lung disorders. This role supports detection and analysis of novel molecular markers to help reduce patient morbidity and mortality from immunologic lung disease following human stem cell transplantation. A Master's degree in Biology, Immunology, or a relevant field is required, along with at least five years of relevant scientific experience, the ability to design experiments and analyze results with appropriate statistical analysis, and the ability to write methods and results sections for high-quality scientific publications.

Field of Study

  • Biology, Immunology, or a relevant field

Skills

  • At least five (5) years of relevant scientific experience
  • Ability to perform next-generation sequencing, cell-free DNA analysis, cell-free RNA analysis, and high-density proteomics platform assays, as well as learn other assays as assigned
  • Ability to design experiments to meet the requirements of the principal investigator
  • Ability to analyze results and present them with appropriate statistical analysis
  • Ability to write methods and results sections for high-quality scientific publications

Deliverables

  • Work products and documents related to performing experiments and procedures, including but not limited to cell-free DNA, cell-free RNA, and a variety of -omic platforms — Upon Request
  • Work products and documents related to recording and interpreting experimental research data — Upon Request
  • Computer-generated work, including preparing manuscript drafts for publication — Upon Request
  • Work products and documents related to providing reports of research activities — Upon Request
  • Preliminary reports related to budget and regulatory activities — Upon Request

Statement of Work Details

  • Serve as a Biologist and senior research scientist in the conduct and leadership of research focusing on immunologic lung injury
  • Use multiple advanced molecular techniques — including next-generation sequencing, cell-free DNA and cell-free RNA analysis, and high-density proteomics platforms — to support early diagnosis of lung injury, disease monitoring, and personalized treatments for patients who have or are at risk of serious lung disorders
  • Provide detection and analysis of novel molecular markers to support reducing patient morbidity and mortality due to immunologic lung disease following human stem cell transplantation
  • Identify causative immunologic mechanisms (cells and molecules) in each patient to direct further therapeutic interventions related to autoimmune-associated lung injury after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation
  • Support the "Early Detection of Infectious and Noninfectious Lung Diseases Following Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation" protocol (001742-H) by performing single-cell sequencing and high-density proteomic analysis of blood and lung cells to help define mechanisms of altered lung function and identify patients at high risk of life-threatening lung injury
  • Support the "Quantitative Autoantibody Levels and Proteomic Endotypes in Myositis-Interstitial Lung Disease" study (B2B Award 1167415) by performing high-density proteomic assays (e.g., proximal extension assay) and quantitative autoantibody assays to characterize proteomic endotypes and identify trends in autoantibody levels and protein signatures in response to immunosuppressive therapy
  • Support other research projects as assigned
