Job Summary

A quality engineer is responsible for the generation of a strategic plan to improve the business processes and increase production output. Duties include creating the company's quality standards and testing systems to reflect efficiency, reliability, and performance. Quality engineers are also responsible for the creation of documentation that reports issues and errors relating to the production process with efforts placed to find a solution. Specific in this position will be to document and control all relevant QMS requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop policies and procedures for manufacturing that align to the corporate architecture.
  • Be able to architecturally design and build out a document control program for Rivian from a top factory level.  
  • Develop and control process designs in a way to meet industry best practice.
  • Steer document management system for the factory.
  • Ensure products/process adhere to company and industry quality standards.
  • Brainstorm and drive ideas to create solutions for identified problems.
  • Develop crossfunctional processes and control them through process and policy documentation.  
  • Formulate a strategic plan to increase productivity in the business through process definition.
  • Floor walks to ensure factory documents are controlled.
  • Implement a working system to ensure conformity and accuracy in the production process.
  • Lead cross functional teams in ensuring all process and documents in Factory are controlled.
  • Serve as advanced SME for Document Control and provide support around Document Control during Internal/External Audits of the Quality Management System.
  • Monitor and periodically report metrics of usage, document status, and released/obsolete documents in the ETQ system.
  • Serve as Administrator and advanced subject matter expert with the document control system.
  • Analyze health and status of Document Control across Quality Systems.
  • Collaborate within and across the organization on company-wide initiatives revolving around Document Control through establishing strong relationships with all levels of the business / cross-functional stakeholders, managing stakeholder expectations and facilitating discussions to ensure information flow, transparency, collaboration, and effective execution of solutions aligned to business needs.
  • Have a strong understanding of Quality and Manufacturing & Operations processes, and technical expertise to identify and map business requirements, and recommend improvements to documentation, and other document control systems in use at Rivian
  • Create and develop document templates to be used within the document control system and integrate system metadata to document templates.
  • Serve as a Reviewer and provide feedback (representative from Quality) for Controlled Documentation from Cross-functional departments.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to provide feedback and guidance and ensure that Quality Systems Document Control and Records Retention systems are complying with all organizational policies and procedures.
  • Work with SME (Subject Matter Experts) across Enterprise Quality and Operations & Manufacturing to provide guidance and feedback on writing, publishing, and maintaining Quality Systems documentation (policies, procedures, standards, forms/checklists etc.)
  • Serve as SME for Document Control items covered in the Rivian Quality Operating System/Quality Manual.

Marginal Duties

Potential business travel to support product /process/system development at company locations in Michigan and California.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Set goals for performance and deadlines in ways that comply with company’s plans and vision.
  • Organize workflow and ensure that team members understand their duties and delegated tasks.
  • Ensure adherence to legal and company policies and procedures.

Qualifications - To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

•        Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

•        Demonstrated project management skills.

•        High proficiency in computer technology and systems operations. Prior experience in designing document control systems and architecture.

•        APQP (Advanced Product Quality Planning) experience.

•        8D or similar method problem solving experience.

•        Manufacturing/assembly process experience.

•        Experience with DFMEA, PFMEA, and control plans in order to define processes.

•        Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

•        Good electronic communication software skills (MS Office, Minitab, email, etc.).

•        6 Sigma greenbelt or blackbelt desired.

•        Serve as an advanced subject matter expert on Document Control per ISO9001/IATF16949 standards.

 

Education And/Or Experience

Engineering, Quality, Business, or Technical Bachelor-Degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

5+ years’ experience in manufacturing environment.

Language, Mathematical, And/OR Reasoning Ability

Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. 

Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 Ability to communicate in a high-pressure environment.
