This is an 8 month Co-op. Full-time employment is required.

  • Co-op A: January-August (Spring/Summer)
  • Co-op B: May-December (Summer/Fall)

Responsibilities

  • Join the Cell Engineering team, leading next-generation battery technology for Rivian’s products.
  • Build and manage a talented team of engineers and scientists working on developing cathode active materials.
  • Develop the vision for the team’s ideas to flourish from concept to mass production through Rivian’s manufacturing development and validation process and integrate into Rivian’s products.
  • Work collaboratively with some of the world’s best Cell engineers to optimize Cathode Active Material’s efficiency, process and equipment through creative problem solving on cost and lifecycle.
  • Define materials strategy for vertical integration with short and long-term milestones including framework for standardization.
  • Keep us current and connected on all the newest technologies and feasibility towards our short- and long-term goals.
  • Manage relationships and expectations with external and internal equipment suppliers and engineers to design pilot scale through to full production scale lines

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree and/or Ph.D. in in materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or similar technical field
  • Experience with solid-state synthesis, co-precipitation, sol-gel, and/or hydrothermal synthesis to synthesize CAM materials in kg to ton scale is preferred
  • Knowledgeable in high and low volume manufacturing is a plus (e.g., prototyping, OEE, equipment selection, DFM, 8D, and/or CAD)
  • Critical problem-solving skills: ability to ask the right people, the right questions at the right time in the right way
  • Detail oriented: ability to become subject matter expert in order to make informed decisions
  • Curiosity: demonstrate level of interest that enables inventiveness
  • Execution: demonstrate that follow through is given as much attention as problem solving
  • Structured: able to organize chaos thru methodical framework and documentation to achieve goals harmoniously
  • Capable of working as a member of a team across several cross functional disciplines, including product design, quality, construction, production, supply chain, controls, external vendors etc.
  • Work with building design, construction, and facilities in all phases of implementing new manufacturing lines
