The role and your team:

We are looking for an ambitious and experienced technology expert to join our team! In this role, you will be the technical expert for composite manufacturing and characterization processes with a specialized focus on the characterization technologies of these and similar materials.

Your experience and expertise will be called upon to develop controlled processes in use throughout the structural components of our Lilium Jet, including internal manufacturing and analysis capabilities and processes within the supply chain. You will follow a rigorous approach to establishing the correct process parameter windows to meet engineering intent for building of development hardware, create prototypes and coupon-level hardware samples and data packages for technical approval, and create technical specifications for production equipment to be deployed into our factories.

You will focus especially on materials characterization technologies such as specimen extraction, sample preparation, coupon testing, metallography, and microscopy. You will follow a rigorous approach to establishing the correct operational procedures to meet engineering intent and comply with ASTM industrial norms, as well as create technical documentation vital for process development and industrialization. You will have full ownership of all technical processes concerning characterization of composites, with the responsibility to make this capability ready for providing technical data to the entire Lilium eAircraft organization.

Your Day to Day:

  • Develop and establish material control methods to ensure material integrity prior to being included in our processes.
  • Design and create appropriate test sample geometry and accompanying process windows to support technical plan milestone achievements in collaboration with Engineering and Test functions
  • Use a structured process to assure consistent, well-controlled laboratory operations within a dynamic production environment
  • Qualify special processes by performing a wide range of destructive characterization operations and generate vital technical data showing material conformance
  • Execute a continuous stream of characterization work packages in support of product and process development milestones
  • Use a structured process to assess technical feasibility, producibility, and manufacturability of cure and moulding technology applications on aircraft parts
  • Create technical plans detailing tooling, process, process control methods, and sample characterisation to support fixed process approval
  • Write process and technical specifications for ASTM-compliant characterization operations, train technicians and deploy technology as required
  • Use Statistical Process Control to identify and control key process variables, apply a structured, statistics-based approach to establish process control plans
  • Execute PFMEA analysis on all applications of fixed processes
  • Participate in engineering design trade-off studies, advising the teams on the most producible & reliable methods of processing composite components based of the design options for each product.
  • Develop a process parameter monitoring and control scheme in collaboration with production IT and automation teams

Your Profile:

  • Mechanical, Materials, or Chemical Engineering, or Industrial-related Master’s Degree, or graduate of manufacturing apprentice program combined with Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience manufacturing and laboratory environments; automotive or aerospace composite manufacturing environments focused on developing and industrializing complex processes a plus
  • Six Sigma DFSS/DMAIC Green Belt certification or higher
  • Strong technical expertise in materials manufacturing and characterization, document writing, and sample control
  • Strong organizational capability with continuous attention to maintaining well-controlled lab operations, including 5S control of lab environment, tool and consumable monitoring, and continuous improvement
  • Excellent analytical capabilities, written communication, and verbal communication to solve problems with urgency and collaborate with varied technical audiences.
  • Experience developing, maintaining, and leading strong, collaborative relationships with design teams and equipment manufacturers alike.
  • Passion for identifying, evaluating, and implementing new manufacturing technologies using an Agile approach to learn fast
  • Adept at working cross-functionally, especially with Design Engineering, Quality, Procurement, Program Management, and other cross-business functions.
  • ICT Skills: Minitab, R, or similar statistical analysis software; Microsoft Office suite especially Word, Powerpoint, & Excel.
