About the company:
Our Mission
At Vertical Aerospace, we are pioneering the way for electric aviation. The VX4, our eVTOL (electric, vertical, take-off and landing), ‘zero emissions’ aircraft will set a new safety standard for how we will navigate the sky.
We won’t realise our mission following the same legacy processes and traditions our predecessors followed, instead, we want to ‘redefine’ aerospace best practices.
We are growing quickly from a prototype business to a scaling SME, and the next few years will be critical to our success and delivering on our ambitious goals of having the VX4 in service by 2030.
What to Expect
As Principal Fatigue and Damage Tolerance Engineer, you’ll take the lead in defining and executing advanced fatigue and damage tolerance methods on novel aircraft structures. You’ll work at the interface of design, certification and testing — guiding your engineering team and collaborating with structural design, airworthiness, test and supplier teams. You’ll set the technical direction for lightweight metallic and composite structures, and steer the delivery of certifiable solutions that meet stringent safety and performance goals.
What You’ll Do
- Lead the development and deployment of fatigue and damage tolerance (F&DT) analysis methods for novel metallic and composite structures
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to a team of F&DT engineers, ensuring high standards of analytical quality and safety
- Carry out detailed fatigue and crack growth analysis using both first-principles and numerical methods
- Define and deliver the means of compliance for F&DT in line with certification requirements
- Collaborate closely with Design, Test, Certification and Airworthiness teams to integrate F&DT solutions into the wider aircraft programme
- Review and approve technical documentation and analysis to support design decisions and regulatory submissions
- Develop tools and processes to improve analysis efficiency and traceability
- Represent the F&DT function in cross-functional reviews and provide clear, concise communication at all levels of the business
What You’ll Bring
- Extensive experience (typically 10+ years) in fatigue and damage tolerance analysis for aerospace structures
- Strong knowledge of both metallic and composite materials and their behaviour under fatigue loading
- Degree in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field
- Proven track record of leading technical teams and delivering F&DT analysis on time and to a high standard
- Hands-on experience with fatigue and crack growth tools and the development of in-house analysis methods
- Clear understanding of certification processes and means of compliance related to F&DT
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex topics to technical and non-technical audiences
- Experience working with regulatory authorities or holding technical approval/signatory rights is a strong advantage
