About the company:

We are Sila—a next generation battery materials company dedicated to accelerating energy transformation for a more sustainable future.

Our next-gen anode material is the first significant chemistry improvement to lithium-ion batteries to reach the market in 30 years. Our silicon anode material is a simple drop-in replacement to graphite and significantly boosts the energy density of lithium-ion batteries without compromising performance.

Today, Sila science powers innovative consumer electronics. Tomorrow, it will fuel our EV future and the electrification of everything.

We work directly with leading consumer electronics and automotive OEMs to help accelerate product roadmaps, and partners with battery manufacturers commercial cell production. Our partners include BMW, Daimler, and ATL.

Sila Nano works directly with leading consumer electronics and automotive OEMs to help accelerate product roadmaps, and partners with battery manufacturers commercial cell production.

Sila Nano’s first products significantly increase the energy density of state-of-the-art lithium-ion batteries. Our materials are manufacturable economically at scale and are drop-in replacements to existing battery manufacturing processes.

WHO YOU ARE

You are a self-sufficient, experienced, hands-on Equipment Design Engineer with an aptitude for learning new things and completing big, sophisticated projects. You take real ownership of your responsibilities from early concept through validation and handoff, while working collaboratively with your teammates across the organization to deliver the best possible outcomes. Your work is thoroughly documented; it’s rare that a question posed to you doesn’t already have the answer written down. You have excellent communication skills and are able to deftly navigate through technical discussions and debates. You’re flexible, not formulaic, in your approach to solving problems.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Work collaboratively with other teams to design machines and subsystems for scaling up first-of-their-kind chemical reactions. This includes mechanical, electronic, plumbing, and automation systems.
  • Turn these designs into robust machines, using both in-house design-build teams and outside vendors.
  • Deploy and bring hardware online from the first component to final production handoff. When things break, dig deep to find and permanently resolve the root cause.
  • Develop and perform meaningful, robust unit tests on systems you’ve created.
  • Generate detailed documentation of your work for use by other teams throughout a project and after its completion.
  • Gather feedback from end-users and distill into actionable modifications. Iterate.
  • Engage with a range of different external parties (fabricators, equipment OEMs, consultants, contractors) and manage complex technical procurements to success.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related field and 15+ years of industry experience (fewer for candidates with an advanced degree).
  • Have built and deployed complex, robust, mission-critical capital equipment involving technical risk and high uptime requirements.
  • Effortless proficiency at designing and generating mechanical parts and assemblies, ideally with SolidWorks 3D and AutoCAD 2D.
  • Deep understanding and proven application of mechanical engineering principles: heat, flow, structures, and materials.
  • Experience with complex automated equipment and familiarity with associated software stacks.
  • Basic electronics and wiring practices knowledge (analog signals, AC and DC power fundamentals, control wiring, and diagnostic tools).
  • Experience with field-deployed electronics, sensors, and actuators.
  • Experience generating outward-facing document packages and working with vendors to get things built.
  • Experience in fields with meaningful technical risk and scientific depth is preferable (e.g. vacuum, semiconductor, or chemical processing with extreme temperatures, extreme pressures, unforgiving chemistry, and critical flows)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Pass a respirator fit test and be able to wear respiratory protection on a periodic basis
  • Wear personal protective equipment including, but not limited to, a lab coat, gloves, safety glasses, and steel toe safety shoes
  • Move items up to 50 lbs with the assistance of lift equipment and carts
  • Move long distances (such as from building to building)
  • Can travel both domestically and internationally up to 25% of the time
