Position: Microbial Engineering Intern May 2023 - August 2023 
Location: Boston, MA

Our team at Pivot Bio located in the Greater Boston area is looking for a team member who wants to bring agricultural innovations by realizing the potentials of soil microbes. The position will work with diverse soil microbes and develop microbial assays to better understand their performance in natural environments. This position presents unique opportunities to learn cutting-edge molecular techniques in synthetic biology and to implement innovative ideas for environmentally sustainable agricultural practices in a real-world setting. 

Responsibilities:  

  • Develop assays to uncover microbial performance in natural environments.  
  • Develop genetic tools to monitor plant responses.  
  • Communicate and collaborate with colleagues in varied scientific and technical roles.  
  • Organize and document experiments and data analysis in a timely manner.  

Physical Demands: 

  • 75% lab work and 25% computer work.  
  • Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands, or fingers.
  • Light work that includes moving objects up to 20 pounds, occasionally up to 50 pounds. 
  • Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing. 
  • Communicating with others to exchange information. 
  • Occasionally operating machinery. 

Qualifications and Experience:  

  • Pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in a quantitative discipline, such as microbiology, plant biology, genetic engineering, synthetic biology, systems biology or equivalent. 
  • Good understanding of microbial metabolism and physiology. 
  • Good understanding of molecular biology including genetic manipulation. 
  • Attention to detail and ability to effectively perform tasks as directed by supervisor or according to an SOP. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
