As the SPARC Plasma Facing Components (PFC) Responsible Engineer, you will lead the development of optimized component design from concept into prototyping and production and finally in installation in SPARC.

This team member will:

  • Guide the team members in analysis, design, modeling, and input from Materials and Physics team on the performance of the plasma facing components during various plasma events
  • Ensure the design passes the thermal and structural analysis requirements
  • Produce refined design concepts for efficient manufacturing and in time delivery with cost in mind is critical
  • Ensure non conformances or modifications during production and installation are implemented striking the right balance between cost, schedule and performance
  • Ensure the fastest path of development and where necessary modify the models and drawings
  • Work closely with the PLM, manufacturing engineering and supplier integration team to support the process by steady release of the drawings and technical specifications
  • Use available tools for effective communication within and without the team and track the progress, to ensure systematic and predictable development path
  • Be responsible to ensure observance of the interfaces with neighboring systems
  • Plan the work maintaining the milestones of the integrated master schedule
  • Author, review and approve design notes, technical specifications, regular reporting, assembly procedures and documentation necessary to fabricate and install the parts
  • Participate in vendor selection and ensure production process control is in place and implemented
  • Take the leadership role in a product development from design to manufacturing and working with vendors to fabricate the parts to the specifications and manage deviations.
  • The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or above
  • 5+ years' of engineering design and analysis experience
  • Knowledge of welding of components for efficient joining to support a reliable, geometrically precise and economically viable structure
  • Knowledge of vacuum application in areas of vacuum side welding and surface preparation/cleanliness for vacuum applications
  • Experience with measurement systems, such as CMM, laser tracker, metrology and scanning tools for dimensional verification of machined components, as well as spatial measurements is critical to your success
  • Experience with machine shop environment and precision machining of high strength and tough materials
  • Familiarity with CAM process/software and G code is highly desirable. Any exposure to welding processes is a bonus
  • Advanced cad skills in NX, both in modeling and drawings; understanding of GD&T and spatial tolerancing on digital measurement systems are necessary
  • Able to communicate effectively in a team and a fast-paced environment, making well informed decisions
  • Additional experience and/or qualifications:

  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time
  • Willingness to occasionally travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call
  • Work in a facility that contains industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics
