About the company:

Revolutionising urban air mobility and electrifying air travel

Our Mission

At Vertical Aerospace, we are pioneering the future of electric aviation. Our revolutionary aircraft, the VX4, an electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, designed to be safe, quiet, zero-emissions, and affordable. We are redefining aerospace best practices and breaking new ground to create a sustainable transport solution that helps decarbonise aviation.

We're transforming from a prototype-led business into a fast-scaling SME, and the next few years will be critical to achieving our ambitious goal: certifying and bringing the VX4 into commercial service by 2030.

What to Expect

As a Mechanical Design Engineer within the Energy Storage Systems team, you’ll play a key role in designing and developing the battery packs that power the VX4. You will contribute to a multidisciplinary team focused on mechanical and thermal sub-systems that meet stringent aviation standards for performance and safety.

Your work will be hands-on and diverse, ranging from detailed 3D CAD work and releasing engineering drawings to collaborating across systems, manufacturing, quality, and testing teams. You’ll drive work packages independently, engage in DFMEA and DFMA, and support prototype builds and testing events.

What You’ll Do

  • Support the design and development of mechanical and thermal sub-systems for the VX4 battery packs.

  • Collaborate with design, systems, stress, thermal, and manufacturing engineers to create and validate designs.

  • Create and manage engineering drawings and documentation in 3DX/CATIA.

  • Work with supply chain and quality teams to ensure timely and compliant part delivery.

  • Engage in requirements decomposition and traceability across system and component levels.

  • Contribute to verification and validation planning activities.

  • Support the build and test activities of prototypes and development hardware.

What You’ll Bring

  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

  • At least 2 years’ experience in mechanical design for energy storage or complex electromechanical systems.

  • Proficiency in 3DX/CATIA V6 and PLM tools.

  • Experience working with engineering requirements and managing work packages.

  • Ability to clearly communicate technical concepts and project progress.

  • Strong collaboration skills across engineering disciplines.

Desirable

  • Experience in aerospace qualification and certification processes.

  • Knowledge of battery systems including thermal runaway mitigation.

  • Familiarity with GD&T, tolerance analysis, and critical characteristics management.

  • Understanding of DFMA principles and practical application.

  • Hands-on experience in mechanical/thermal simulation.

  • Experience handling non-conformances and continuous improvement activities.

  • Exposure to DFMEA (e.g. APIS-IQ) and requirements management tools (e.g. DOORS, JAMA).

What can you expect from us?

We're on a mission. Where others see limits, we see opportunity, and we work at pace. Working at Vertical isn't your average role but for those seeking a challenge, a flexible, supportive organisation and an incredible team; working here is an opportunity to do the best work of your career.
