We are looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer who will:

Thrive on working on new and novel engineering concepts. You will join a team of highly motivated people that are passionate about creating robust designs using the latest technology.

Day to day work is undertaken with a significant degree of independence and initiative, with supervision and guidance from accountable manager on longer range planning and unusual problems. Uses strong interpersonal skills to establish and maintain excellent relationships with other engineers, both internal and external to Vertical, to ensure work is aligned with wider engineering effort. 

The responsibilities and duties of the Mechanical Design Engineer will be as follows:

  • Leading the physical and functional design and integration of a mechanical system within the aircraft, from concept development through to system certification. (e.g., rotor blade pitch control, EPU tilt or rotor stow)
  • Development of systems level trade studies to ensure an optimised solution at aircraft level.
  • Ensure that the design developed within the team is practical, achievable and meets time, cost and quality goals.
  • Creation, author and peer review of systems specification data, CAD, drawings and mechanical system design solutions.
  • Conduct multi-disciplinary design reviews throughout the different phases of aircraft development
  • Lead the development of models, bench and rig tests and on-aircraft integration testing.
  • Management of internal and external stakeholders, suppliers and partners to deliver on time, cost and quality.
  • Provide guidance to test, production, flight test and operations teams on the safe and proper use of mechanical systems.

The successful Mechanical Design will have the following Experiences & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in aerospace engineering or a similar discipline
  • Previous aircraft experience is ideal, particularly the development and integration of mechanical systems, components or linkages.
  • Experience of the product development life cycle, manufacturing and in-service use is desirable.
  • Understanding of systems engineering principles, and application of the V&V process.
  • A track record of cross disciplinary working, bring people and teams together for a common goal.
  • Good practical mindset, ideally with hands-on experience of integrating mechanical systems in a lab or live environment.
  • Experience with CATIA V6 (3Dx) is advantageous, alternatively experience with other PLM/CAD systems to manage the engineering lifecycle.
  • Strong organisational skills and an ability to focus on and complete detailed tasks in a busy, fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to interface with a wide range of disciplines within engineering.
