Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Materials Scientist with expertise in materials characterization to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate has experience with FTIR, Raman Spec, SEM, tensile testing, and other characterization techniques, with a strong background and specialization in Materials Science, ideally biological or polymeric materials. 

The candidate will be responsible for developing characterization methods and implementing them, conducting mechanical, optical, and chemical testing as well as microscopy and other characterization techniques, and analyzing characterization data  to understand material properties and performance. The candidate will also develop models for material performance. 

This position requires proficiency in various characterization techniques and the ability to apply this knowledge to enhance Fine Mycelium™ and Reishi™ product development and innovation.

Responsibilities:

Technical leadership:

  • Develop and execute the technical strategy for relevant testing and final material quality prediction based on intermediate material performance.
  • Manage relationships with external partners for timely execution of material characterization efforts.

Material Characterization:

  • Use advanced characterization techniques (e.g., SEM, FTIR, mechanical testing) to study structural, chemical, and mechanical properties 
  • Collaborate with other Innovation Center teams to support new product development

Data Analysis and Reporting: 

  • Analyze characterization data to interpret material behaviors and generate meaningful insights.
  • Correlate material data to mycelium characterization data. 
  • Prepare and present detailed reports to cross-functional teams and stakeholders, including key clients.

Failure Analysis and Process Improvement: 

  • Investigate material failures or issues, conducting root cause analysis in collaboration with mycelium characterization and upstream process discovery team
  • Recommend improvements or adjustments to material properties or manufacturing processes.

Testing and Validation: 

  • Plan, execute, and interpret materials tests to validate hypotheses, simulate real-world conditions, and assess long-term material durability and reliability.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Materials Science preferred. Masters or Ph.D. in Materials Science, Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, or a related field considered with sufficient materials characterization experience..
  • 5+ years of experience in material characterization or related fields
  • Hands-on experience with advanced characterization techniques (e.g., SEM, FTIR, Raman spectroscopy).
  • Experience developing and executing strategic technical plans
  • Strong knowledge of materials science principles.
  • Experience in materials testing, mechanical testing, and failure analysis.
  • Proficient in data analysis and statistical software. Knowledge of material modeling techniques is a plus.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a technical team, and cross-functionally.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, coordinate work with others, and meet milestones in a fast-paced setting.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to learn new methodologies quickly as research priorities evolve.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills for reporting results to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strategic, collaborative, and proactive mindset.
  • Experience in industry, ideally characterizing with biological or polymeric materials  biomaterials.
  • Ability to travel up to 10%

Our job titles may span more than one career level. The targeted base pay for this role is $128,000-$140,000 . The actual pay is dependent on other factors such as training, skills, work experience and business needs. The target pay range is subject to change and may be modified. This role is also eligible for benefits and equity.
