About the company:

Doing something different is never easy. It requires courage, optimism and grit. Core to our mission is building a team of adventurous individuals determined to make a positive impact on the world. This means challenging ourselves constantly. Stretching beyond the bounds of conventional thinking. Reframing old problems. Seeking new solutions. And operating comfortably in a space of uncertainty. While our backgrounds are diverse, our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations. Do you like doing the impossible? We’d love to hear from you.

Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.

As a company, we constantly challenge what’s possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.

This is what you'll do:

  • Reliability is at the core of Electric Adventure Vehicles. As a Technician in the Materials Engineering (ME) team, you will play a key role in generating insight through assistance in fastener installation testing and failure analysis investigations for all Rivian products from the vehicle to component level.
  • The ME Lab Technician will aid in laboratory equipment maintenance, management of consumables stock, and sample tracking and inventory, under the technical direction of the Lab Scientist.
  • Assist the lab engineers and scientists in their characterization and failure analysis of fastener systems.

Core responsibilities:

  • Operation of various laboratory equipment (specific instrument training will be provided) to generate data, perform materials characterization testing, or preparation of samples, with a specific focus on fastener systems.
  • Preventative maintenance of laboratory equipment on a scheduled basis to ensure maximum uptime and operability of the equipment.
  • Assist in day to day organization of the lab, including ordering consumables, maintenance of chemical inventory, sample organization and tracking, etc.
  • Produce clear and concise reports to summarize data collected and be able to clearly present this to the ME lab engineers and scientists.

This is what you'll need:

  • Experience working in a laboratory environment, including the handling and safe working practices associated with hazardous chemicals. Must be very safety conscious and uphold lab safety guidelines.
  • Experience in metallurgical sample preparation - cross sectioning, grinding, polishing and etching (including handling hazardous chemicals and mixing etchant recipes).
  • Experience with optical microscopes and macro photography.
  • Experience working with basic machine shop tools such as band saw, drill press, belt sander, lathe, milling machine, etc.
  • A desire to create a respectful, fun, inclusive and inspiring team and company culture is a must!

Highly desirable:

  • Knowledge of and hands on experience with the following:
    • Mechanical testing equipment (e.g. Instron, MTS) for tensile, bend, fatigue testing, etc.
    • Hardness/Micro Hardness testing
    • Dye Penetrant/UV Magnetic Particle Testing
    • X-ray imaging - 3D CT Scanner or 2D X-ray system
    • Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM).
  • Experience in the automotive industry is a big plus.
