About the company:

We are Sila—a next generation battery materials company dedicated to accelerating energy transformation for a more sustainable future.

Our next-gen anode material is the first significant chemistry improvement to lithium-ion batteries to reach the market in 30 years. Our silicon anode material is a simple drop-in replacement to graphite and significantly boosts the energy density of lithium-ion batteries without compromising performance.

Today, Sila science powers innovative consumer electronics. Tomorrow, it will fuel our EV future and the electrification of everything.

We work directly with leading consumer electronics and automotive OEMs to help accelerate product roadmaps, and partners with battery manufacturers commercial cell production. Our partners include BMW, Daimler, and ATL.

Sila Nano works directly with leading consumer electronics and automotive OEMs to help accelerate product roadmaps, and partners with battery manufacturers commercial cell production.

Sila Nano’s first products significantly increase the energy density of state-of-the-art lithium-ion batteries. Our materials are manufacturable economically at scale and are drop-in replacements to existing battery manufacturing processes.

ABOUT US:

We design and produce engineered materials that dramatically increase the energy density of rechargeable Li-ion batteries. We enable smaller, lighter, longer lasting electronic devices and unlock mass adoption of affordable, long-range electric vehicles. Our products work today, are a drop-in solution for existing battery manufacturing processes, and can be manufactured economically at scale.

Sila was founded in 2011 and is based in Alameda, CA. Our founders are two early Tesla Motors battery engineers and a Professor of Materials Science at Georgia Tech. We’re backed by top tier venture capital firms, led by Bessemer Venture Partners, Matrix Partners, Sutter Hill Ventures, and In-Q-Tel.

Our company culture is built on personal growth, mutual trust, inclusiveness, and safety. We are building a world-class materials company, where our team is close, debates are data-driven, and our nerdiest office puppies are named Angstrom, Lumen, and Gadget.

We believe that building a diverse team at Sila helps us amplify our individual talents. We are an equal opportunity employer and committed to creating an inclusive environment where good ideas are free to come from anyone. We are proud to celebrate diversity and all qualified applicants are considered for employment without regard to gender, race, sexual orientation, religion, age, disability, national origin, or any other status protected by law.

WHO YOU ARE

You are excited about discovering and understanding the chemical pathways that form the foundation for the synthesis of next generation materials. You take pride in re-designing and tweaking reactor hardware to explore and improve these unique materials.  You collaboratively validate these reactors and processes with well-designed experiments, creative analysis, and state-of-the-art characterization methods. The understanding that you develop is trusted by the community to inform critical decisions impacting the future directions of next generation battery materials.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Iterate on reactors to provide insight into new materials deposition techniques and the unique materials that can be made with them.
  • Discover, and then teach, the physical mechanisms at the heart of synthesizing our complex nanomaterials via solid-state reactions and vapor deposition techniques.
  • Document and communicate findings with actionable information for a variety of groups. Help refine the technical aspects of research efforts to ensure they are rigorous and lead to unambiguous results.
  • As a mentor to others in the team, offer active listening, collaborative brainstorming, and cooperative hands-on laboratory exploration.
  • Identify safety hazards and work cooperatively to implement improvements.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  • PhD or equivalent research experience with a focus in chemistry, physics, chemical engineering, materials science, or a related field.
  • Studying and uncovering mechanisms for a gas, liquid, or gas-solid reaction, and applying that mechanistic understanding to iterate on materials synthesis methods.
  • Design/build/iterate on reactors and analytical tools, based on underlying physical and chemical reaction mechanisms, to explain and highlight important parameter spaces and parameter interdependencies.
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical findings to a diverse audience.
  • Experience in collaborative problem solving: helping people share knowledge, ideas, resources, and strategies in order to solve challenging scientific problems.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Pass a respirator fit test and be able to wear respiratory protection on a daily basis
  • Wear personal protective equipment including, but not limited to, a lab coat, gloves, safety glasses, and steel toe safety shoes
  • Use a glove box to prepare samples
  • Move items up to 25 lbs with the assistance of lift equipment and carts
  • Move long distances (such as from building to building) and be stationary for extended periods of time
  • Precise and repetitive handling delicate samples
  • Operate a computer and other office equipment, such as a laptop, copier/printer, etc in a fixed location
  • Operate analytical equipment at a bench
