About the company:

M-KOPA is a fintech and digital financial services company that provides smartphones and a range of financial products to everyday earners across sub-Saharan Africa, operating in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, and Uganda. The company uses an asset-financing model that allows customers to make an initial deposit on a smartphone and then pay it off through affordable daily, weekly, or monthly installments, building a credit history in the process. This approach has enabled M-KOPA to serve over 10 million customers and unlock more than $2 billion in credit for individuals who are largely excluded from traditional financial systems. M-KOPA's suite of services extends beyond device ownership to include digital loans, health insurance, device protection, and affordable data bundles, all designed to expand economic opportunity for low-income populations. The company also operates a large network of over 35,000 sales agents, many of whom are themselves beneficiaries of the economic empowerment model M-KOPA promotes. M-KOPA has been recognized among the world's top fintech companies and continues to scale its impact across the African continent. While M-KOPA is primarily categorized as a fintech company, its roots are in the renewable energy and pay-as-you-go solar sector, where it pioneered off-grid solar solutions for underserved communities before expanding into smartphones and broader financial services. This evolution reflects the company's enduring mission to connect underserved populations to transformative technologies and financial tools that improve quality of life and drive sustainable economic inclusion.

Marketing Assistant, Smartphones | Kenya

You're accomplished. You've run campaigns that landed, briefed agencies that delivered, and you can read a sales-uplift report without flinching. You're probably even happy. But when did your marketing last change what someone was able to do with their life?

A scale that's hard to find elsewhere

M-KOPA has unlocked more than $2 billion in credit for 7 million customers across Africa. 55% of them are accessing formal financial services for the first time. 70% use their products to earn an income, and 86% tell us their quality of life has improved. We're 2,300+ people supported by 35,000 agents, we've contributed $45 million in taxes, and in Kenya we've assembled 2 million smartphones locally. For many of our customers, that phone is the first door into the digital economy.

What makes this different

In most corporate marketing roles, you own a slice: the social calendar, the activations, the reporting. Here you own the whole arc, from the first brief to the shop floor to the sales number that follows.

Above-the-line, in-store, social, influencer, partnership and dealer channels all sit under one leader, so the story a customer sees on their phone is the same one they find at the counter. And you'll be judged on what matters: conversion, sales uplift and customer impact, not impressions. You'll work directly with country leadership, with real say over where marketing spend goes and why.

What you bring

  • A proven track record of leading integrated ATL and BTL campaigns end to end, from brief through launch to post-campaign impact reporting, with demonstrable accountability for budget and measurable sales uplift.

  • Demonstrable experience directing agencies, influencer programmes and brand partnerships, alongside a disciplined content and social calendar, and the analytical ability to turn performance data and customer research into decisions.

  • Established command of marketing operations, including request workflows, procurement, purchase orders and the stock of marketing materials and devices that retail activations depend on, with real comfort in dealer-network and retail environments.

You'll also bring the judgement to know when a campaign needs to be more local, the credibility to make agencies do their best work, and the curiosity to ask a customer what they actually think. A degree in marketing or communications is welcome, but we care far more about what you've shipped.

What you'll do

  • Set the agenda. Write the campaign briefs, localise and protect the brand across every execution, and run launches from content packs and retail activation plans through to the post-campaign review.

  • Run the channels customers actually use. Direct the social channels and our WhatsApp channel, steer influencer campaigns from sourcing to posting, and deliver partnerships, promotions, and dealer and van branding that people notice.

  • Own the evidence. Run SMS-based customer research and quarterly retail surveys, track spend against sales uplift and conversion, and bring leadership a clear view of what worked, what didn't, and what to do next.

Behind all of that sits the machinery: tracking marketing requests through to stakeholder sign-off, managing procurement and stock, and triggering replenishment before anyone has to ask. You'll also shape how the wider Kenya team works, improving processes and sharing product knowledge as the business grows.

The reality check

This role is broad. You'll move from a strategic conversation with leadership to a purchase order in the same afternoon, and the work spans the creative and the operational. It rewards someone who likes seeing a campaign through every step. If that sounds like how you already work, you're probably ready for exactly this.

Let's talk

If you're reading this and thinking that your current role has a ceiling you've started to notice, that's probably the signal. Reach out for a conversation. No pressure, no formalities. Just a chance to find out whether this is the evolution you didn't know you were looking for.
