Manager, Software Engineering

Harbinger Motors is seeking an experienced and dynamic Manager, Software Engineering with a strong software engineering background to actively lead, mentor, and contribute alongside our talented team of engineers. In this pivotal role, you will be instrumental in shaping the technical direction and successful delivery of robust applications across our innovative suite, encompassing both user interfaces and scalable backend services. This includes critical platforms like our Fleet Dashboard, End-of-Life (EOL) Tool, Diagnostic Tool (Service), Feature Configurator (Sales), and Log Viewer (Analytics). You'll guide your team in developing highly performant, scalable, and intuitive solutions that directly impact our business and customers, often by diving into the code yourself.

We're looking for a hands-on leader who can balance deep technical expertise across multiple languages and frameworks with effective team management, fostering a collaborative environment where engineers can thrive and deliver exceptional results through technical leadership by example.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead by Example & Mentor: Lead, mentor, and grow a diverse team of full-stack software engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence, collaboration, and continuous learning. Actively participate in the design, development, and debugging of complex features, serving as a technical role model and contributing code when necessary.

  • Technical Strategy & Vision: Define and drive the technical strategy and roadmap for full-stack development, ensuring alignment with overall product goals and architectural best practices. Be a key voice in architectural decisions, guiding the team through complex technical challenges.

  • Project Leadership & Delivery: Oversee the end-to-end software development lifecycle for critical applications, ensuring timely delivery of high-quality, scalable, and maintainable solutions. This includes frontend (React/Next.js/TypeScript) and backend (Python/GoLang) components for applications like the Fleet Dashboard, EOL Tool, Diagnostic Tool, Feature Configurator, and Log Viewer.

  • Architectural Guidance & Implementation: Provide strong technical guidance and oversight in the design, development, and implementation of complex systems, leveraging expertise in TypeScript, React, Next.js, Python, and GoLang. Roll up your sleeves to prototype solutions, tackle critical bugs, and optimize performance alongside your team.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with product managers, UX/UI designers, and other engineering teams to translate business requirements into technical specifications and deliver cohesive, user-centric features and robust backend services.

  • Code Quality & Standards: Establish and enforce coding standards across both frontend and backend domains. Conduct comprehensive code reviews, providing detailed, constructive feedback, and actively contribute to the codebase to maintain high standards. Promote robust testing methodologies (unit, integration, e2e) to ensure the stability, performance, and maintainability of our codebase.

  • Talent Management: Actively participate in the hiring process, onboard new engineers, conduct performance reviews, and support the professional development and career growth of your team members.

  • Process Improvement: Continuously evaluate and improve engineering processes, tools, and practices to maximize team efficiency, productivity, and project predictability.

  • Technical Problem Solving: Guide the team in troubleshooting complex full-stack issues, optimizing application performance, and ensuring a seamless and reliable user experience from client to server. Be prepared to deep-dive into technical problems and propose solutions.

  • Technology Advancement: Stay abreast of emerging full-stack technologies, frameworks, and industry trends, evaluating and recommending adoption where beneficial to enhance development efficiency and product capabilities.

Required Qualifications:

  • 6+ years of professional experience in full-stack software development, with at least 3+ years in a leadership or management role overseeing engineering teams.

  • Proven ability to remain hands-on with code while managing a team, demonstrating recent contributions to a codebase.

  • Deep expertise in frontend technologies: including React.js and its ecosystem (hooks, context API, state management), and TypeScript, with proven experience building and scaling complex user interfaces.

  • Extensive experience with Next.js for server-side rendering, static site generation, and building performant production-ready applications.

  • Strong proficiency in backend development with demonstrable experience in Python (e.g., Django, Flask, FastAPI) and/or GoLang.

  • Familiarity with database technologies (e.g., SQL, NoSQL) and API design principles (RESTful, GraphQL).

  • Demonstrable experience with modern JavaScript testing frameworks (e.g., Jest, React Testing Library, Cypress) and a commitment to test-driven development.

  • Solid understanding of modern web development concepts, including HTML5, CSS3, responsive design, accessibility standards, and web performance optimization.

  • Proficiency with version control systems (e.g., GitHub, Bitbucket) and experience managing complex branching strategies.

  • Exceptional leadership, mentoring, and coaching skills, with a proven ability to motivate and develop high-performing engineering teams.

  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and critical thinking skills across the full stack.

  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, and to influence decisions across teams.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple concurrent projects, prioritize effectively in a dynamic environment, and consistently meet deadlines.

Bonus Points:

  • Experience with UI/UX design principles and a strong user-centric mindset.
