About the company:

Loam works with 4.5 billion years of evolution to solve the climate crisis. Microbes have changed the composition of our atmosphere through earth’s history. At Loam, we are ensuring these organisms can do it again. Through a better understanding of how microbes influence the carbon cycle, we can create new planetary-scale opportunities for carbon sequestration and improve agricultural productivity.

About Loam:

At Loam, we have the earth in our hands. As a team of scientists, farmers and entrepreneurs, we are on a mission to improve the world’s agricultural production systems and address climate change. We are developing microbial technology to remove CO2 from the atmosphere, build carbon in agricultural soils and reduce enteric methane emissions of ruminant livestock. We help farming businesses prosper by boosting crop yields and soil health, improving the productivity of ruminant livestock and enabling access to carbon markets.

As a start-up with ambitious founders and investors, our work is fast-paced and multi-dimensional. We foster a supportive and diverse workplace, where every team member is encouraged to learn and grow beyond their area of expertise.

While everyone at Loam is working in different roles, we all have one job: to reduce the impact of climate change by either removing CO2 from the atmosphere or preventing CO2 emissions from occurring.

The Role:

As Loam’s liquid bioproduction specialist, you will be based with a team of brilliant researchers and product developers in Orange, NSW. In this role you will define and optimise liquid fermentation processes for a microbial organism derived product line which reduces enteric methane emissions. You will be working closely in a cross-functional product development team including microbiologists, formulation chemists, animal production scientists, collaborators and service providers.

Requirements

  • Design, plan and execute in-house bench-top liquid bioproduction optimisation experiments
  • Co-ordinate techno-economic analysis of the bioproduction process
  • Managing external bioproduction contracts and toll-manufacturing partnerships
  • Support the upscaling of bioproduction processes
  • Oversee the bioproduction process to generate material for product performance testing
  • Assist in the trialling and evaluation of downstream processing methods, working with formulation specialists
  • Work with the formulations team to test experimental productions across methods for yield, purity and stability
  • Developing and maintaining a bioproduction protocol library relevant to fungi and other microbial components for the testing and validation of production approaches
  • Reporting on progress to the wider team
  • Manage technical support for projects

About You:

  • A deep understanding of liquid microbial fermentation processes with a masters or PhD in a related field
  • Minimum 3-5+ years experience in liquid fermentation in a commercial or product development environment
  • A high level of safety awareness and ability to carry out risk assessments
  • Competence in use and maintenance of fermentation equipment
  • Ability to take ownership of delivery, with a results focused mindset
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to communicate dependencies
  • Experience with GCMS useful but not essential

Benefits

  • Fast-growing start-up with many opportunities for capacity building and career development
  • Work alongside leading scientists and innovators in an international organisation
  • Enjoy an inclusive and supportive culture
  • Competitive salary based on experience
