Your role and your team:

We are seeking a Lead Materials and Processes Engineer with experience in developing energy storage systems aerospace products. You will be responsible for leading a team of M&P engineers in supporting various design efforts, including the material qualification and process development for battery systems, electronic systems, high temperature and fire resistant applications as part of our aerospace certification.

As the lead of a M&P team, you will work closely with various Integrated Project Team members to support all aspects of design, manufacturing, and quality assurance. Additional responsibilities will include hands-on concept development, generating material and process specifications, performing material characterizing, and identification of various degradation modes to establish key safety and performance requirements suitable for aerospace applications.

Your Day to Day:

  • Lead the M&P team in supporting the design and development of next generation aerospace products part of our energy storage system.
  • Responsible for expert guidance in metallic and non-metallic materials, including the development and certification for a wide variety of high-performance and safety critical applications.
  • Drive qualification efforts by writing test plans, reports, and specifications and establish statistically based requirements for aerospace certification.
  • Research new technology proposals and provide recommendations for rapid concept evaluation, including next generation solutions for high strength, abrasion and impact resistant structural material systems.
  • Support various program needs, which include design failure mode and effect analysis, substantiation of non-conformance dispositions, root cause and corrective action analyses.
  • Define technical roadmaps to achieve program objectives, including development of initial concepts, prototyping, verification, and validation efforts.
  • Document best practices and effectively share lessons learned in a rapidly evolving environment, including authoring technical memos and presentations.

Your Profile:

  • BS. in engineering or science (i.e., chemistry, chemical engineering, material science and engineering, or similar) (Ph.D./ M. Sc. preferred).
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in an aerospace certification environment, ideally in a leadership capacity.
  • A strong background in both metallic and non-metallic manufacturing processes is required, including demonstrated experience with establishing statistically based material properties, evaluating key performance parameters including aging, long term durability, chemical, mechanical and processing risk characterization.
  • Desired non-metallic material experience include cyanate esters, polyimides, BMI, phenolic resin, polyfurfuryl alcohol (PFA), or phthalonitrile (PN) resin systems and high temperature coatings for thermal management, emissivity and oxidation resistance.
  • Desired metallic material experience include high-temperature alloys, extreme environment coatings (Thermal/Fire Barrier), or metallic matrix composites.
  • Strong understanding of material and process qualification is required, with hands-on experience in the design and development of advanced aerospace parts being beneficial.
  • Experience with the fire resistance test procedures a plus: Heat Release Rate (ISO 5660-1, ASTM E 1354-1), Minimum Oxygen for Combustion (ISO 4589, ASTM D 2863), Time To Ignition, Fire Performance Index and Fire Growth Rate.
  • Self-reliance with the ability to work in a team, as well as individually.
  • Highly energetic personality is desirable, with a goal-oriented working style and demonstrated analytical problem-solving skills.
  • Strong verbal communication and writing skills are essential.
  • Fluent English language skills are essential, Fluent German or any other language would be beneficial.
