About the company:

At SPAN, we believe that powering homes with clean energy should be a simple and delightful experience that is technology-forward and human-centered.

SPAN is advancing clean energy adoption with innovative hardware that replaces the electrical panel and becomes the home's center for connected power. It’s easier and faster to install, and it completely transforms the customer experience with intuitive energy controls and customizable backup power.

Our Mission

SPAN develops products that accelerate the rapid adoption of renewable energy in the home. The flagship SPAN Smart Panel is the first true evolution for the traditional home electric panel, harnessing enhanced technology for metering, monitoring, and control. An expanded product suite of intelligent, integrated solutions radically lowers the cost and complexity of energy upgrades–including solar, batteries and EVs–empowering homeowners to be active, resilient and informed players in the energy market.

The Role

We are seeking an experienced and driven manufacturing test engineer who will be the point person on a mixed internal/external team supporting the technical development and implementation of manufacturing test infrastructure for SPAN products at our contract manufacturing sites. As a key engineer working on manufacturing test, you will lead the effort to scale up Span’s manufacturing test capability from low- to high-volume manufacturing, drawing on your prior experience in manufacturing test to help us ramp quickly and smoothly to meet the growing demand for Span’s products.

In this position, you will be:

  • Responsible for the manufacturing test architecture of Span products.

  • Project managing the full manufacturing test infrastructure development process, including test plan development, fixture build, software, data capture and infrastructure deployment.  This includes prototype to volume production leading a cross functional team including engineers and third-party vendors.

  • Supporting the Span Engineering Team in the design and development of test infrastructure that will be used for both development and manufacturing applications.

  • Coordinating with the engineering design team to determine test parameters, producing test documentation, troubleshooting, and deployment of test infrastructure.

  • Focusing on translating various internal and external requirements into test operations and plans with the appropriate coverage, and assisting with iteration when new coverage issues are discovered,

  • Optimizing test infrastructure for manufacturing, assessing the strengths and weaknesses of tests to support manufacturing environments.

  • Making key build-vs-buy decisions about test fixtures; help find and select vendors.

  • Managing relationships with third-party fixture development shops and our CM’s manufacturing test team.

  • Participating in product design reviews and offering DFT feedback to Span engineers.

  • Aiding the NPI team as needed in troubleshooting and supporting in-line test fixtures.

  • Responsible for test throughput and capacity analysis.  Also, driving yield improvements.

About You

Required Qualifications

We are seeking a seasoned test engineer who has:

  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent with typically 6+ years experience.

  • Strong fundamentals in test engineering with good analytical and problem solving skills.

  • Professional experience deploying functional test infrastructure for PCBAs and full products in a manufacturing production environment.

  • Working knowledge of test software (eg: LabView), databases and database management.

  • Solid abilities with lab equipment (e.g. high speed oscilloscope etc.) and hardware troubleshooting.

  • Excellent project management skills, including written and verbal communication. Ability to effectively communicate testing architectures, plans, proposals, and results, and negotiate options across all management levels.

Bonus Qualifications

We would love to hire someone who has:

  • Knowledge of DFT requirements in support of both flying probe or ICT, and functional tests.

  • Working knowledge of Python.

  • Created or managed data visualization tools and dashboards (Tableau, PowerBI, etc).

  • Experience working with contract manufacturers.

  • Knowledge of industrial safety requirements such as UL 508, OSHA, etc.

  • Demonstrated success working in a cross disciplinary, multi-cultural environment.
